When I shut down my PC the cooling fan starts at full speed until I shut off power.  Normally, the fan noise is minimal and I have recently cleaned out all dust so don't understand why this is so.

Any suggestions as to how I might cure this aberrant behaviour?

Sorry, Treeko,

I have a HP Compaq Elite 8300 SFF desktop, not a laptop.

I previously posted a plea for help and received a reply essentially telling me to vacuum the interior, unplug the main fan cooling the CPU and all should be well.  i have done that to no effect.  I have limped along as the problem is more an inconvenience than a serious lack of functionality.

My thinking is that there is something, could be hardware or software related, that keeps the circuit that drives that cooling fan on after the mainframe has shut down.  The fan spins at what appears to be full speed although it is imperceptible during normal operation.

Hope that clarifies things and may help you with a diagnosis and fix.

all the best,
