According to support, my RTX 4070 ti is definitely not compatible.

Does anyone know if one of the NVIDIA RTX A2000, A4000, or A5000 models can be installed?

What adapters and accessories do I need for this?

The connections are all proprietary...

@huk_69,

Welcome to our HP Community forum!

One assumes that you got an HP Z2 Tower G9 Workstation -please verify.

If so, there are four different power supplies: 350, 450, 500, and a 700-watt PSU.

Which power supply do you have?

For example, if you were to aspire, say, to install an RTX 4080 Super, you can do this with the 700-watt power supply (p/n: M82200-002 or M86370-001), like this Userbenchmark User did: HP Z2 Tower G9 Workstation Desktop PC Performance Results - UserBenchmark, ditto for an RTX 5000 Ada GenHP Z2 Tower G9 Workstation Desktop PC Performance Results - UserBenchmark -but I digress.

An RTX A2000 12GB can be powered by the 350-watt power supply.

An RTX A4000 requires at least the 350-watt power supply (the 450-watt or 500-watt PSU would be advisable).

An RTX A5000 requires at least the 500-watt power supply (the 700-watt PSU would be advisable).

An RTX A6000 requires the 700-watt power supply.

All the aforementioned cards are very much compatible with your Workstation.

Yes, unfortunately these power supplies are all proprietary, but it is what it is.

Hello NonSequitur777,
Thank you very much for your professional response.
My power supply is 450W.
So I will settle for an RTX A2000 or A4000.
Is it correct that neither model requires a direct connection to the power supply and can therefore be easily plugged into the circuit board?
Many thanks, Karl

@huk_69,

You are quite welcome, glad I can be of assistance!

The RTX A2000 does not require a PCIe power cable, but the RTX A4000 does require a single 6-pin PCIe power cable.

If your 450-watt power supply is not equipped with a PCIe power cable, you'll have to use a dual SATA 15-pin to 6-pin PCIe power adapter cable, such as shown in this Amazon-Germany purchase example: Aukson K31 S-ATA 2x 15pin Male to 6-Pin PCI-Express Adapter Cable SATA Graphics Card for PC : Amazon....  Say if you only got one 15-pin SATA power cable available, you'll have to use a 15-pin SATA splitter cable, such as this one: Bolwins K14S SATA Extension Cable 15 Pin to 2 x SATA Female - Power Cable Adapter for SSD and HDD Ha....

Just keep in mind that you can always upgrade your power supply to the 700-watt option. According to HP, this power supply includes dual 6+2 PCIe power cables, each capable to deliver 12V x 18A = 216-watt.

Warm Regards,

Hello NonSequitur777
I have now purchased an RTX A4000 with a suitable power cable, as you recommended.
Everything fits perfectly on the circuit board and with the 450W power supply.
However, I am getting an error message that leads to a blue screen, which ultimately requires me to shut down the PC.
901-Chassis Fan Not Detected. (Front)

Is there a solution to this problem?

Best regards, Karl

Hello NonSequitur777

@huk_69,

All right; it looks like you’re actually dealing with two unrelated issues:

1. 901 – Chassis Fan Not Detected:

This error is not caused by the RTX A4000. It happens when the system doesn’t detect the front chassis fan through the motherboard header.

Possible causes:

  • The front chassis fan cable may have been bumped or disconnected during the GPU installation.

  • The fan itself may have failed, or its tachometer (signal wire) isn’t being read.

  • On some Z2 Tower G9 models, replacing or re-routing cables can block proper detection.

I would suggest you:

  • Power down and unplug the PC.

  • Open the side panel and check the small 4-pin fan connector from the front chassis fan to the motherboard header (usually marked “CHA_FAN” or “SYS_FAN”).

  • Make sure it’s firmly seated. If disconnected, reseat it.

  • Make sure none of the 4-pin's little PWM wires are damaged or disconnected.
  • If the error persists, try swapping the fan with another 4-pin fan temporarily to see if it’s a fan failure or a header issue.

Until this is resolved, the workstation may refuse to boot properly, since HP treats missing fans as a thermal safety risk.

2. BitLocker Recovery Key Prompt:

This can appear after a hardware change (such as a GPU swap) because Windows sees it as a possible security risk. It’s not caused by or related to the fan error.

Here’s how to get your BitLocker recovery key:

  1. On another device (phone, tablet, or computer), go to: https://account.microsoft.com/devices/recoverykey.

  2. Sign in with the same Microsoft account that you use to log into Windows on your HP Z2 Tower G9.

  3. After logging in, you’ll see a list of recovery keys tied to your account.

    • Look for the key ID that matches the one displayed on your workstation’s BitLocker screen.

    • Enter that recovery key into the prompt on your Z2.

Once entered, Windows should unlock and boot normally.

In short/Zusamenfassend:

  • The 901 fan error = hardware/fan connection issue, not GPU-related.

  • The BitLocker prompt = security feature may have been triggered by the hardware change, fixed by retrieving your recovery key online.

Kind Regards,
