Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

Hello, i have HP Omen 870-053ur. I havent changed anything in it, It have Motherboard Thimphu-K 2B4B 1.04, GPU Geforce GTX 970, and CPU Intel Core i5-6400 @2.70Ghz. I want to upgrade to CPU Amd Ryzen 5 3600 and GPU Amd RX 6600. And i want to know if this will work on my current motherboard?

@evystdct,

Yes, that is indeed what I am saying: the Thimphu (6th-gen Intel processors) with p/n: 799926-001 and Thimphu-K (7th-gen Intel processors) with p/n: 799926-002 are different.  They look the same, they have the same LGA 1151 CPU socket, and they even have the same Intel Z170 Chipset, but HP micro-coded them differently.

The best processor you could install in your Thimphu motherboard would be the i7-6700K.

The AMD Ryzen 5 3600 has a completely different AM4 processor socket altogether.

Please note that an RX 6600 graphics card requires at least a 400-watt power supply, but that shouldn't be an issue as I believe your PC got a 500-watt power supply -please verify.

Kind Regards,

@evystdct,

Welcome to our HP Community forum!

Your OMEN by HP Desktop PC - 870-053ur as fitted with the Thimphu motherboard (SSID: 2B4B) -please verify: the Thimphu-K motherboard is only compatible with Intel Core 7th gen processors), is only compatible with Intel Core 6th processors, not AMD processors.

You meant to say Thimphu and Thimphu-k is different? Or that I can't change CPU to AMD at all on that motherboard and need to buy new motherboard?

@evystdct,

Come to think of it, there is a small possibility that you actually could have a Thimphu-K motherboard -but fitted with a 6th gen Intel processor.  In that case, the best processor that would be compatible with your motherboard would be the i7-7700K.

To make things difficult (thanks, HP) both the Thimphu and Thimphu-K motherboards appear to have the same 2B4B SSID identifier.

Unless I am mistaken, the only way to figure out what motherboard version you got is to tell me what the writings and/or part number are on your motherboard, or to try out an i7-7700K and see if it works.
