HP ENVY - 17m-ae111dx
Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

I just got a gaming monitor, specifically the Dell Gaming Monitor - G3223Q to use as an external monitor to my laptop, a HP Envy 17m-ae111dx (relevant specs maybe: Nvidia GeForce MX150, Intel i7 core, UHD Graphics 620)

To use with them, I also got the Dell Universal Dock UD22. I made sure to install the driver and even the utility download.

I usually keep my laptop updated, and figures things like the bios tends to update itself but that may be the only thing left to try if it doesn't.

To the point, the problem is that whether the input source is the DP or HDMI, the signal isn't detected from my laptop and my laptop isn't detecting the monitor either. Only my screen display tablet, the Kamvas Pro 13
I'm concerned the issue is compatibility at this point if nothing else, even though I did make sure to talk to HP support to check if this setup would be doable beforehand

@PetitePinkTiger,

Welcome to our HP Community forum!

Given that your Dell Gaming Monitor - G3223Q is not being detected when connected to your HP Envy 17m-ae111dx via the Dell Universal Dock UD22, let's review the most likely potential causes and commonly recommended troubleshooting steps:

1. Connection and Port Compatibility

  • Check the Dock Ports: Verify that you are using the correct output port (e.g., HDMI or DisplayPort) on the UD22 dock.
  • Cable and Adapter Quality: Ensure that the HDMI or DisplayPort cable you are using supports the resolution and refresh rate of the monitor. A faulty or low-quality cable may cause detection issues.
  • Monitor Input Settings: Ensure that the monitor is set to the correct input source (e.g., HDMI 1, HDMI 2, DisplayPort).

2. Dock Capabilities

  • Dock Resolution Support: The Dell UD22 dock supports different resolutions depending on its configuration. Check if it supports 4K at 120 Hz, which is the optimal setting for the Dell G3223Q monitor.
  • Display Connections: The dock’s output capacity might be limited if too many peripherals are connected. Disconnect unused devices and try again.

3. Driver Issues

  • Dock Driver: Ensure the Dell Universal Dock UD22 driver is installed and up-to-date. You can download it from Dell's support site.
  • Graphics Driver: Update the GPU driver on your HP Envy 17m-ae111dx. This includes both integrated (Intel) and dedicated (e.g., NVIDIA) graphics drivers.
  • Monitor Driver: Although not always necessary, Dell sometimes provides specific drivers for their monitors. Check if there’s one available for the G3223Q.

4. Power Delivery

  • Ensure that the dock is receiving adequate power and is correctly connected to the laptop. Insufficient power might cause peripherals to malfunction.

5. Laptop and Dock Compatibility

  • Display Protocol: Confirm that the HP Envy 17m-ae111dx supports external display output through the dock. This depends on the USB-C/Thunderbolt capabilities of your laptop.
  • Alternate Mode Support: For the dock to output video, the laptop’s USB-C port must support DisplayPort Alternate Mode.

6. Troubleshooting Steps

  • Direct Connection Test: Connect the monitor directly to the laptop using an HDMI or DisplayPort cable. If it works, the issue is likely with the dock.
  • Test Another Monitor/Device: Connect another monitor to the dock or test the G3223Q on a different device to isolate the issue.
  • Reset the Dock: Disconnect the dock completely, unplug it from power, and reconnect it after a few minutes.
  • Monitor Factory Reset: Perform a factory reset on the Dell G3223Q to clear any incorrect settings.

7. Dock Firmware

  • Update Dock Firmware: Check Dell's website for firmware updates for the UD22. Dock firmware updates can resolve compatibility and performance issues.

8. BIOS/UEFI Settings

  • Check the BIOS/UEFI settings on your HP Envy laptop to ensure external displays are enabled and no specific port restrictions are applied.

9. Check for HDCP and Bandwidth Issues

  • Some monitors have strict HDCP (High-bandwidth Digital Content Protection) requirements, which may not be fully supported through certain docks or cables.
  • The G3223Q requires substantial bandwidth for 4K at 120 Hz. If other peripherals are using the dock, the monitor’s resolution or refresh rate might need to be reduced.

10. External Software or Conflicts

  • Temporarily disable software that might interfere with display output, such as screen recorders or third-party GPU management tools.

If the issue persists after these steps:

  • Test another laptop with the same dock and monitor to rule out hardware issues with the dock.
  • Contact Dell support for assistance with the UD22 dock and verify compatibility with your specific setup.
  • Consult HP support for any potential limitations of the HP Envy 17m-ae111dx’s USB-C output.

Let me know how the troubleshooting goes or if you need further guidance!

Kind Regards,

@PetitePinkTiger

How do you connect them ? Using USB-C port ? They are NOT compatible because USB-C port on your machine is NOT the same as the USB-C port on the Dell dock.

Your machine is NOT compatible with any standard USB-C docks.

Updated.  You can NOT use the hopeless USB-C port on your machine to connect to an external monitor nor charge your machine using USB-C chargers.

Regards.

@banhien,

I wasn't exactly born yesterday, my friend.  Unless an actual HP specialist tells me/us otherwise, the sources I reached out to in order to provide a legit response to the OP begs to differ.

Here are some of them:

I said about THAT USB-C on the HP Envy 17m-ae1... series before (I remember now, I talked with you) and won't say it again
