Graphics Specifications - Elitedesk 800 G4 35W Desktop (Mini)

This is a mini form factor unit. 

The specifications say it can upgrade to an AMD 560 GPU.

Can it take anything more powerful? 

Do I need to shop for a special version of the GPU with the mini form factor, such as low profile or something out specific?

I see it also says I will need to go to the 95 W Power supply so I'll plan that when I can.

The EliteDesk 800 G4 Desktop Mini is somewhat unique because HP actually offered an optional AMD Radeon RX 560 discrete graphics configuration from the factory. This means that, unlike most Desktop Mini systems, graphics upgrades beyond the integrated Intel GPU are possible.

However, there are a few important caveats:

• The Desktop Mini does not accept standard PCIe graphics cards, even low-profile models.
• You need an HP-specific graphics module designed for the Desktop Mini platform.
• Yes, you will likely need the larger 95-watt external power adapter if your system currently has the smaller adapter.
• The graphics module should include (or be compatible with) the proper heatsink and fan assembly.

Interestingly, some users have reported success using HP RX 560X-based Desktop Mini modules, so you may not be limited strictly to the original RX 560 specification. The key is obtaining a module that was designed for the HP Desktop Mini platform rather than focusing solely on whether it is labeled RX 560 or RX 560X.

Before purchasing anything, I would recommend posting the exact graphics module you are considering (part number or link), and I can help determine whether it is likely to be compatible with your EliteDesk 800 G4 Desktop Mini.

That said, as far as I know, the RX 560 (and closely related RX 560X variants) are the most powerful graphics modules that have been successfully used in the EliteDesk 800 G4 Desktop Mini.

HP officially offered the RX 560 option for the G4 DM, but I am not aware of any supported GTX 1050 Ti, GTX 1650, Quadro P1000, Quadro T-series, or newer Radeon modules for this platform.

The limitation is not the GPU itself but the proprietary graphics connector, cooling design, BIOS support, and power budget of the Desktop Mini chassis.

If your goal is maximum graphics performance while keeping the G4 DM, the RX 560/560X is probably the practical ceiling. Beyond that, you would likely be looking at an external GPU solution or moving to an SFF/Tower platform.

Also, what processor is currently installed in your system? That can help determine whether investing in the discrete graphics module actually makes sense for your intended workload.

I'm probably just interested in the 560 graphics card if i didn't just burn it out (another thread). 

How do I search for the style/form factor of the hp model? Pricing is a big factor for me.

OK, the official HP spare part number for the AMD Radeon RX 560 (4GB GDDR5) discrete graphics card assembly compatible with your HP EliteDesk 800 G4 DM is: L31404-001 "PC board GRFX W/COOLER assembly ED".

The challenge is to find one of these rather rare graphics cards for sale. I couldn't find any of these cards for sale at the moment, not even via AliExpress.  The record shows that used, pulled modules occasionally surface on eBay. Historically, they sell anywhere from $150 to $300, often pulled straight out of decommissioned corporate EliteDesk units.  It appears that you'll have to exercise patience and check eBay regularly to see if one of these cards are offered for sale.

Btw, when you add an AMD Radeon RX560 4 GB GDDR5 discrete graphics card, you will need to upgrade your power supply with the 150-watt option, especially if your current power supply is the 65-watt model.

What do you know -I spoke too soon:

This module complete with the cooling fan (under a different part number) is for sale right now via eBay: AMD Radeon RX560 4GB DP GPU for HP EliteDesk Pro Mini PC L21467-001 L21466-001 | eBay for $110, which I would consider to be a great deal based on its rarity and historical pricing!  For example, the next one up for sale is offered for $189: NEW HP EliteDesk 800 G4 DM Mini AMD Radeon RX560 4G GDDR5 video card DA0F83TH6A0 | eBay.

Please note that the seller from the $110 module offer does not accept returns.  Meaning, there is always a risk that the unit may not work, though my experience with eBay is that if there is an issue with a purchase like that when it was offered as, quote: "is fully operational and functions as intended", eBay will generally reimburse you.

the main issue with non HP video cards on this model is that the video mounting bracket is not a standard low profile one but a unique HP designed one it is however possible to modify the std low profile bracket if you have the nessary metal working tools/skill

second issue is the heatsink,....... most retail/OEM heatsinks will most likely not fit properly and prevent the card from being properly installed with the cover on again it is possible to modify the heatsink mounting bracket/heatsink of some 3rd party ones for use in this HP model
