The mother board has sata ports available but the pcie specs are better. Where can I find information as to what is compatible with the motherboard?

if you google most PC made , you can find specs,
the HP.com support page has some,
not sure what you want to do or need, me,.
but you SAID, SSD, , is that m.2 card or 2.5" SATA cabled drives?

no m.2 cards there.
you can used any SSD, 2.5 " made on earth , no limits, at all. NTFS, for sure GPT mode. 64bit OS.
the limit is Peta bytes, done correctly (formatted)
mobo link1.
6x SATA 2.0 connectors (SATA 0 - 1 @ 6 Gb/s, SATA 2 -5 @ 3 Gb/s)
a 500MB/s drive is easy hit. super easy. go to benchmark SSD page (google that seen it) if speed is your bag, buy the fast one from say Samsung.
