I have a new HP desktop running Win11. It has an i7-11th Gen and a 1GB SSD drive (for Op Sys; Apps; etc.) and a 2GB HDD (for Files and Pictures; etc.). This seems to be the setup most used and recommended.

ISSUE... when I click to Open a file (from the HDD) I have to often wait for the HDD to Spin Up.

Is there a way this can be solved?

The delay from HHD Spinning Up easily offsets the quickness of the App being used on the SSD.  I just can't believe this delay would be normal.

I have searched to Web to no avail.

Thanks for any help.

@drol343 -- open the Windows "Device Manager". Double-click on the device-entry for the disk-drive.

Check its "power" tab, to see if Windows is allowed to "spin-down" the device, to reduce its usage of power.

Itsmyname... Thanks for your response.

1) I could find no "Power Tab" at Device Manager / Disk Drives / My HDD... see graphic below.

2) This is what I could find in Windows 11; based on the idea you gave me...

  • Type Control Panel in the Search box,
  • Hardware and Sound
  • Power Options
  • Then within your currently selected Power Plan (likely “HP Recommended”), click the Change plan settings option
  • Then click the Change advanced power settings link at the bottom.
  • Then, under Hard Disk you can see the Turn off hard disk after option
    • Note: it appears in Windows 11 you must have a Turn Off time. See image below
  • Then Click Apply and click OK.
  • Then reboot your PC to save changes. Then you can check if your hard disk still goes to sleep or not. Not sure about the Reboot on Windows 11.
