Microsoft Windows 11

Pressing ON button - nothing

Taking out mains power supply and pressing ON button for 20 secs - then plugging in power and pressing ON button makes the fans move for 20  secs and green light on the ON button comes on - then everything goes off after 10 secs

There is no tester for the on-board power supply as it only has 2 square connectors for the motherboard, which is different to common power supplies which have dedicated testers to see if the ON BOARD PS is faulty

Where do I go from here ?  Have taken out CMOS battery and replaced and tried a new stick of RAM

It also has a 16Gb stick of Intel Optane memory in the form of a m.2 drive ????

Buying a new PS or Motherboard is expensive and no guarantee it is going to fix the problem !!

Help !

Disconnect the PC for the mains.

Remove one of the memory modules and then plug back into the mains power.

Press the power button.

What happens?

If not change, power down and remove that module and replace it with the other one.

What is the result?

Thanks

Well I had the hard disk and 16Gb "module"? out anyway

So did what you said - removed PS and 8Gb RAM

Reconnected PS

Switched on - 3 long beeps and 2 short ones

Put back 8Gb and Hard disk - switched on - Screen lit up and said no boot device

So I gathered it might be something to do with the 16Gb Module

Put the 16Gb back, and back to original problem sadly

Could the 16gb module be faulty - tried to read it with a USB disk reader (not sure if it was the right one) - module has 2 spaces - a bit like this one :

Couldn't read it as my other computer says it needs formatting ??

The key was the error message"

"no boot device"

That error tells you that the 250 GB M.2 SSD has a problem. It is a SATA 3 V-NAND SSD.

What kind of USB adapter did your use? The M.2 USB adapters  can be specific to SSD types, as in NVMe or SATA.

That image you provided is of the M.2 SSD. it is not a 16GB memory module.

The three long beeps two short beeps is a memory initialization error.

One of the memory modules has a problem.

Based on what you stated, it is the 16 GB module.

I understand about the "no boot device, as my first sentence said I removed it anyway !

The image I sent LOOKED like what I had - here is the actual one

leachim2_0-1704215186088.png

It also only has 1 8Gb memory module anyway so when I took it out as instructed, there were no modules in so the beeps would happen anyway

The hard drive is a normal 2Tb drive

Can I use it without the 16Gb M.2 ?

==========

Additionally, I reset the BIOS when the battery was taken out (after it went wrong) and I noticed the date of the BIOS was 2009 ????

Also RAID was set up and Legacy mode chosen....

Any idea what the bios settings should be for a W11 machine ?

I have connected everything up inc Hard Drive and 16Gb - the ON button only works when I disconnect the PS for about an hour and during that time the ON button is pressed in for 1 minute

It then lights up the screen then says CMOS checksum error

leachim2_1-1704219485213.png

Then Boot device not found

BIOS settings ?

Resetting the BIOS is likely to be what caused the issue.

It probably has the Intel IRST set to disable.

The 16GB M.2 SSD is used by the Intel IRST as a cache drive to accelerate  communication between the storage devices and the drive controllers in your system. That is also why you can't access it by way of a USB adapter and Windows Explorer since it isn't used as a standard storage device.

See the thread at the link below this line.

https://h30434.www3.hp.com/t5/Notebook-Hardware-and-Upgrade-Questions/Intel-Rapid-Storage-Technology...

You are going to have to try recovering the BIOS, enabling IRST in the BIOS  and then making the change in the Intel IRST console as described.

The BIOS is actually dated 2018

Tried to use a usb with bios update on it to update the bios by booting from it, to no avail

One thing I don't get is - after leaving power cable out for 1 hour - the ON button works ONCE - then when it wont boot - the computer goes off - pressing ON button again soon after produces nothing

However, if the only memory stick is taken out - it complains with beeping

Switch off - put memory back in - ON button works straight away (still no boot)

That would not happen if I didnt remove the stick - I only have 1 spare memory stick with the same pin formation as the original - same thing happens with that one - although I cant be sure the spare stick is compatible.....

BIOS is set to RAID - and here is the M.2 info
