I need to know if the Ryzen 9 3900x is compatible in the BIOS. I'm already running a separate GPU so having on board graphics is not an issue. much easier to tank down a 3900x than the OEM 3900 Pro CPU that was an available option.

Whether or not your BIOS or chipset is theoretically capable to use an AMD Ryzen 3900X or whether you increased your power supply and upgraded your CPU heatsink cooling capabilities is irrelevant. From all the info I peeked at, HP set a TDP limit of 65-watt for compatible processors.
By all means, don't believe me? -Please try an AMD Ryzen 3900X and see if it works. And as per Heisenberg's uncertainty principle if it somehow does work, I'll buy you a Heineken if I could/was allowed to.

Welcome to our HP User Forum!
It appears that the AMD Ryzen 9 3900x is not compatible with your HP EliteDesk 705 G5 SFF, probably because of its high TDP: 105 watt vs. 65 watt for the AMD Ryzen 9 PRO 3900.
Also, could not find a single HP EliteDesk 705 G5 SFF User with the "X" processor, such as here: UserBenchmark: HP EliteDesk 705 G5 SFF Compatible Components.
Hope this was helpful.
Kind Regards,

Thank you, this answer makes more sense. Your original reply did not make it clear that HP had limited the TDP to 65w for the CPU. Thankfully I was finally able to track down and purchase a non x/xt Ryzen 9 3900 which is the same as the "Pro", a 65W TPD cpu.
