I am working on a client's HP 8300 Elite sff. He believes he received a lightening strike in his house and afraid it got his computer (router seems to be hit and landline telephone). The computer shows no sign of life. Pushing the power button emits NO behavior - no sound, no lights, no beeps... nothing. Steps I have done:
- Replaced the internal CMOS battery.
- Reset the CMOS button
- It appears the PSU jumper is 2-pin. I removed. Tried to power on. And placed back on the 2 pins. No change in behavior.
- Tried a different power cable to outlet.
- His outlet is fine. Other devices work just fine in the outlet.
- Detached/Re-attached the power supply cables to the motherboard (4 and 6 pin connectors-3 of them).
- Reseated all the RAM (16 GB/4 sticks)
- Pressed and held the Power button switch on front for a few seconds... all the way up to 30 seconds.
- Nothing is working. Still no sound of ANY life. No LEDS flashing. No fans. No hard drive/CD drive sound. No beeps. Nothing is powering up. Just dead.
- I do not seen any evidence of a hit on the motherboard. I do not have a voltage regulator to test the power supply, etc...
Is there anything else I need to try before deeming this machine dead? It would be nice if the power supply was standard to replace. Any suggestions to find an HP power supply for this machine? Thanks so much!

Greetings,
Welcome to the forum.
I am not a HP employee.
You know the drill at this point. Nice troubleshooting work!
No UPS?
The lightning strike may have zapped the MB and/or the PSU.
You would have to replace those components to solve the problem. The processor may be toasted.

Just asking.. wouldn't there be some kind of "noise", "beeps" ... etc.. if the PSU was ok but MB or processor fried? I know it wouldn't boot but seems like if there was at least power, there would be a fan noise or something. But like you said, it could be both! Thanks for your answer!

The 8000 series use a common PSU. Can I question you pin 2 comment ? Pin 2 on what connector?
While I would NEVER suggest you try this scenerio, here is the pinout of the various P1, P2, and P3 plugs. P1 and P2 are 6 pin according to this drawing, and P2 pin 3 is the Power ON pin. Unplug all three plugs then test if the fan PSU fan works.

I believe your correct, the PSU is the first component of an electrical strike fail.

Ordered an used OEM power supply for the 8300 sff from Ebay - a seller that had a 99.8 seller rating - we shall see. )) It was $9 (using an EBay coupon I had). Described as being in working order - a pull from business machines. Woud be nice if this fixes the problem. )) Thx for all the help.
