HP Pavilion Gaming Desktop PC TG01-2024na
Microsoft Windows 11

Hi,

I have  a HP PC computer that has the HP 8906 (Erica6) motherboard and my understanding is that this motherboard can take up to 32GB of RAM. I have Corsair Vengeance LPX Black 16GB (2x8GB) / 3200MHz installed in the PC but the PC only seems to detect 8GB of ram.

I dont know what to do to solve the issues, anyone with ideas?

Thanks

Hi @PCdummie,

Welcome to HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

It sounds like your HP Pavilion Gaming Desktop PC with the Erica6 (HP 8906) motherboard isn't detecting the full 16GB of RAM you've installed (2x8GB Corsair Vengeance LPX 3200MHz). Here are some troubleshooting steps you can try to resolve the issue.

Check RAM Installation

  • Turn off your PC and unplug it from the power source.
  • Open your case and ensure that the RAM modules are seated properly in the memory slots. Sometimes, if RAM isn’t fully clicked into place, the system might not detect it.
  • Check that the RAM modules are placed in the correct slots. If your motherboard supports dual-channel mode, the modules should typically be placed in slots 1 and 3 or slots 2 and 4 (refer to your motherboard manual for specifics).

Test One Stick at a Time

  • Remove one stick of RAM and test with just one installed to see if the PC detects it.
  • Swap the sticks between slots and see if one is faulty or if one of the slots is not working.

Check BIOS

  • Restart your PC and enter the BIOS/UEFI (usually by pressing F10 or Esc during boot).
  • In the BIOS, check the memory settings to ensure both RAM sticks are detected.
  • Enable XMP (Extreme Memory Profile) if available, which could help optimize the RAM settings for your specific modules.

Update BIOS

  • Check if there's a BIOS update available for your motherboard on the HP support website. Sometimes memory compatibility issues can be resolved with a BIOS update.

Check Operating System

  • Ensure that your operating system (Windows, etc.) supports more than 8GB of RAM. For example, if you're using a 32-bit version of Windows, it will only recognize up to 4GB. A 64-bit OS is required to use more than 4GB of RAM.
  • Check the maximum memory limit in Windows by going to Run → msconfig → Boot tab → Advanced options and see if the Maximum memory box is checked. If so, uncheck it and restart the system.

Test with Another RAM

  • If possible, try testing the system with a different set of RAM to see if the issue is specific to your current memory sticks.

Check Compatibility

  • Verify that your Corsair Vengeance LPX RAM is compatible with the HP 8906 motherboard. While it should be compatible in most cases, checking the exact specifications from HP's documentation can help confirm.

If you've gone through all of these steps and the system still only detects 8GB of RAM, you might be dealing with a hardware issue—either with the RAM or the motherboard slots.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.
