HP ALL-IN-ONE
Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

I find it very irritating that the F keys default to assignments that HP had picked out instead of normal F key inputs.

In particular, the F2 key which I use a lot in Excel correcting/change data.  Under the present setup, I have to press the Fn key and then the F2 key in order to do what I want it to do in Excel.  IF HP in all their wisdom thinks I want to use the F keys for what they want, they're wrong.  And what torques me off the most is that I have to do this EVERYTIME I want to use the F2 key.

I saw a post that said I should shut the computer down and then hit the F10 key repeatedly in order to get into the BIOS where I could correct this F key problem, but when I did that, I did get into the BIOS, but didn't see anywhere that I could change the default to normal F key inputs.

There a good chance I wouldn't have bought this computer if I had known about the remapping of the normal F key functions.  If anyone knows how to change the F key functions, I would appreciate it.  I mainly use this computer for Excel.

Hi! @arodarod,

It is usually any other key (often the escape key) with a little lock symbol on it. If you press that, it should allow you to use the function keys without holding down the Fn key.

Try the steps recommended below.

To enable FN Lock on the All in One Media Keyboard, press the FN key, and the Caps Lock key at the same time. To disable FN Lock, press the FN key, and the Caps Lock key at the same time again.

Try the steps recommended below.

Click the "Start" button and select "Control Panel." Once the Control Panel loads select "Devices," and then "Keyboard."

Select your multimedia keyboard as the default keyboard from the list at the top of the screen. Check to "enable" multimedia keyboard buttons. You may be asked what functions specific buttons should have. Here you can either leave them with the default settings or select a different task for the buttons in question.

Click "Apply" to save the changes. You can now begin using the multimedia keys on your keyboard.

Go to the BIOS page on your PC and disable the action keys.

1.    Turn off the computer and wait five seconds.
2.    Press the Power button to start the computer and repeatedly press the F10 key to enter the BIOS setup menu.
3.    Go to the system configuration tab.

4.    Select Action keys mode from the list and select Disable.

5.    Press F9 on the keyboard to save changes and exit.

If you still have issues after trying out the steps, it is by design that you need to hold Fn keys in order to use the functions keys.

Hope this answers your query!
Have a great day ahead! 🙂
