HP Compaq 8200 Elite
Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

I was reading the specifications on this page and noticed these in the storage specs:

https://support.hp.com/us-en/document/c02781693#AbT1

  • SATA (7200 rpm):
    From: 250GB
    Up to: 1TB
  • SATA (10000 rpm):
    From: 160GB
    Up to: 300GB
  • SATA Solid State Drive (SSD):
    From: 80GB
    Up to: 160GB

Is this PC literally limited in maximum storage capacity? If I wanted to install a 2TB 7200rpm Hard Drive I buy from a parts shop, would it not function?

Also, I read that 2 of the 4 SATA ports only work for optical drives. Is this true?

Hi:

You can install a 2 TB HDD with no problem whatsoever.

The drives you see listed are only the drives that HP supplied with that model series.

I have a 240 GB SSD in my 8200 Elite and it works just fine.

The reference to the sata ports...only port 0 and 1 are SATA III. Ports 2 and 3 are SATA II (which is why you would put a DVD drive in those two ports).

If you want to toss in two more hard drives instead, that is fine, but understand that if they are SATA III drives, they will only run at the SATA II speed.

A much better document to review regarding the 8200 Elite model series is this one...

http://shop.itema-pg.com/userfiles/editor/file/hp8200sff.pdf

You can find the SATA port information I referenced on page 22.

Graphics cards...I have a nvidia GT 1030 in mine.  Not listed as supported in the document because the card didn't exist at the time.  I am also running W10 on it.  HP indicates W10 is not supported.

If you plan on running W10, do not update the BIOS beyond version 2.28.

Otherwise, it will take over two minutes for the PC to restart afterward.
