Hi:
When running a 32-bit operating system, the maximum is 4 GB.
According to the Crucial memory site, the SFF and CMT would support 4 x 2 GB of DDR2-800 memory with a 64-bit operating system.
HP - Compaq dc7700 Series Convertible Minitower | Memory RAM & SSD Upgrades | Crucial.com
HP - Compaq dc7700 Series Small Form Factor | Memory RAM & SSD Upgrades | Crucial.com
Page 9 of the HP quickspecs indicate the max memory is 4 x 1 GB.
You can do this to see how much memory your notebook can actually support.
1. In the search box, search for cmd and click Run as administrator.
This will open the command prompt.
2. Once command prompt is opened, type wmic memphysical get maxcapacityEx and hit enter.
There, it will show the maximum RAM capacity your PC's motherboard can support.
The capacity is shown as Kilobytes, so you have to convert it to Gigabytes by dividing the number provided in the report by 1,048,576.
Even if the report indicates you can install 8 GB of memory, only 4 GB will be usable with a 32-bit operating system.
