Hi @TAZZ427

Welcome to the HP Support Community! We're here to help you get back up and running.

I understand the concern regarding the BIOS update for your HP Consumer Desktop PC (ROM Family SSID 8A96). Thank you for sharing the details. The message about insufficient disk space can sometimes appear even when your drives have free capacity, as the update process requires specific temporary storage and environment conditions.

Let’s go through the recommended steps to ensure the update completes successfully:

Step 1: Confirm the Correct BIOS Update

  1. Visit the official HP Drivers & Support page for your desktop model: HP Drivers & Downloads
  2. Enter your exact product number or serial number.
  3. Under the BIOS section, verify that the update listed matches ROM Family SSID 8A96. This ensures you are installing the correct file for your system.

Step 2: Prepare the System for Update

  1. Open the HP App (previously HP Smart).
  2. Run Diagnose & Fix to clear temporary issues that may block updates.
  3. Ensure Windows is fully updated and restart the PC before attempting the BIOS update again.
  4. Disconnect any unnecessary external devices (USB drives, printers, etc.) during the update.

Step 3: Free Temporary Storage Used by Updates

  1. Go to Start → Settings → System → Storage → Temporary Files.
  2. Select System created Windows Error Reporting files, Temporary files, and Delivery Optimization files, then click Remove files.
  3. Restart the PC to refresh the update environment.

Step 4: Run the BIOS Update Manually

  1. From the HP Support page, download the BIOS update file directly.
  2. Save it to your local drive (C:).
  3. Right‑click the file and select Run as administrator.
  4. Follow the on‑screen instructions, ensuring the PC is connected to power and not interrupted during the process.

By confirming the correct BIOS file and preparing the system environment, the update should proceed smoothly.

Take care, and have an amazing day!
