HP Desktop PC M01-F1000a (2W898AV)
Microsoft Windows 11

I will be using my system and hear a "chirp" at which point the mouse cursor disappears and the mouse appears dead. i.e. the light is out.  I am using a hardwired mouse and changing it for another does nothing. The only way I've been able to fix this is to shut off power and reboot the system.  Any ideas on a solution for this?

Hi @Finfan71,

Welcome to the HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query. I will be glad to help you.

It sounds like your HP Desktop PC M01-F1000a is experiencing a USB power or driver-related glitch that causes the mouse to disconnect (with a chirp sound) and become unresponsive until a full reboot. This is understandably frustrating, especially since swapping the mouse doesn’t help.

1. Disable USB Selective Suspend

Windows may be turning off USB ports to save power, which can cause this issue.

Steps:

  1. Press Win + R, type powercfg.cpl, and hit Enter.
  2. Click Change plan settings next to your active power plan.
  3. Click Change advanced power settings.
  4. Expand USB settings > USB selective suspend setting.
  5. Set it to Disabled.
  6. Click Apply and OK.

This prevents Windows from powering down USB ports unexpectedly

2. Change USB Power Management Settings

Windows may be set to turn off USB devices to save power.

Steps:

  1. Open Device Manager (Win + X > Device Manager).
  2. Expand Universal Serial Bus controllers.
  3. Right-click each USB Root Hub, go to Properties > Power Management.
  4. Uncheck “Allow the computer to turn off this device to save power”.
  5. Repeat for all USB Root Hubs.

3. Update or Reinstall Mouse Driver

Corrupted drivers can cause intermittent disconnects.

Steps:

  1. In Device Manager, expand Mice and other pointing devices.
  2. Right-click your mouse > Uninstall device.
  3. Restart your PC — Windows will reinstall the driver automatically.

4. Run HP Hardware Diagnostics

To rule out hardware faults:

  • Restart your PC and press Esc, then F2.
  • Go to Component Tests > Mouse/Touchpad and run the test.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have an amazing day!

Sorry Vikram but no joy.  The problem persists unchanged.

Edit: BTW, I am thinking that I might be losing the keyboard at the same time.  ctrl-alt-delete doesn't do anything.  Also, the last time it happened I was in an online game and my character was running.  I lost all control but the game continued until I turned off the power.

Thanks for the Help Vikram!  On a hunch I moved my Mouse and Keyboard connections from the front usb ports to the rear two.  I just recently heard the "chirp" but they both continued to work.  It may not be a fix but at least I found a work around.

Hi @Finfan71,

Thank you for the update, and we’re glad to hear you’ve found a workable solution by moving your mouse and keyboard to the rear USB ports. While it may not address the root cause, it’s great that the devices are now functioning reliably despite the occasional connection sound.

If you notice the issue recurring, we recommend checking for BIOS updates and chipset driver updates for your system on the HP Support website, as these can sometimes improve USB port stability.

We appreciate you sharing your workaround; it may help other users experiencing similar behaviour.

Take care and have an amazing day!
