Family member purchased a HP Envy TE01-3157c with 1 TB SSD M.2 drive. We want to install a secondary 4TB HDD but I do not see any SATA ports listed on the MB specs. And Im afraid that the only M.2 slot is already taken by the 1TB drive that came with the PC. Can anyone tell me if there is an expansion slot for a secondary HDD and what type of exanpsion slot is available for it?
Per the specs sheet the MB has:
- One PCI Express Gen 3.0 x16 - Graphics card is using this
- One PCI Express Gen 3.0 x1 - Cant use for HDD
- Two M.2 expansion slots
- One M.2 socket 1, Key A ?? Not sure what can be plugged into this
- One M.2 socket 3, Key M, (2280/2242) - Im assuming the SSD is already using this.
I cant believe they would make a MB that cant support a secondary hard drive of some sort. Can anyone help me out here?
MB HP name: Reno SSID: 89B5

Hi, @aria123
Yes, the PC has SATA ports because this model has the same motherboard and comes with both a NVMe SSD and a 1 TB hard drive.

However, I would bet dollars to doughnuts that there is no SATA power or data cables to connect the hard drive to since yours did not come with a hard drive.
The data cable shouldn't be a problem, but you will have to order the specific power connector that goes into the motherboard.
Below is the link to the parts list for the above model.
If yours is missing the power cable, you will need to order this part number
L68308-001 | Cable - Pwr(2*2) to SATA(15p)ST,200+80mm,BL,Ro2 |
You can find this part number on eBay.

Its specs
Yes, the M.2 slot is already in use for 1 TB PCIe® NVMe™ M.2 SSD
It motherboard does not say much
But our member said it has 2 SATA ports
Therefore you can add normal SATA drive to your relative machine
Regards.

You're very welcome.
HP used to include a photograph of the motherboards and I don't know why they don't do that anymore.
Makes it very hard to find out what options one has.
The parts list also has the SATA data cable listed as a hard drive, which I missed when I looked before.
It is 190 MM long which is about 7.5 inches long.
