Elite Mini 800 G9
Microsoft Windows 11

I am not familiar with this architecture. Is it possible to upgrade to a dedicated graphics card yourself? What sort of slot is available to take a dedicated card?

@BPolhemus,

You can use an M.2 NVMe SSD slot as a legit graphics card interface in order to connect an eGPU as you asked for.  The AliExpress product makes that happen.

You are correct: there are a relatively few HP Elite Mini 800 G9 desktops fitted with a special GPU module (see #8) with one option only: a Nvidia GeForce 3050 Ti (mobile).  My understanding is that this involves not just the module I highlighted, but also other parts such as an extended internal heatsink to cool the GPU.  This GPU module, and other related parts, are essentially impossible to come by via eCommerce sites, and it is not entirely clear to me if any Mini 800 G9's can be refurbished with this card or not. If you were to go the M.2 NVMe SSD slot to PCIe x16 dock/graphics card route, you'll have to remove the port cover/unit (see #6) to allow graphics card ribbon cables to exit your Mini.  Anyway, I showed what's involved in my HP EliteDesk 800 G4 65W DM upgrade link:

I would imagine that the proprietary HP graphics card port (if one exists in your Mini) could be utilized as a graphics card interface, but no one has jumped to the occasion (yet) to develop a marketable part to make that happen.  You would still have interface cables coming out of your Mini connecting to an external dock on which your external GPU will be seated.

The tried and proven M.2 NVMe slot graphics option is the way to go.

@BPolhemus,

Welcome to our HP User Forum!

You have come to the right place.

As to your question, and I quote: "Is it possible to upgrade to a dedicated graphics card yourself?" -Be careful what you ask for.

In short: yes, absolutely you can!

To your question, quote: "What sort of slot is available to take a dedicated card?" -the answer is one of your M.2 NVMe SSD slots, using this part: PCIe 4.0 x4 Riser Cable 64Gbs M.2 Key M for NVMe External Graphics Card Stand Bracket R43SG PCI-E fo....

With this in mind, brace yourself, and please take a look at my HP EliteDesk 800 65W G4 Desktop Mini (DM) upgrade project, actually very similar in layout as your HP Elite Mini 800 G9: Solved: Upgrading an HP EliteDesk 800 65W G4 Desktop Mini (DM) - HP Support Community - 8708671.

Mind you, I went a little further than most.  Some would say: 'off the Reservation'.  So be it, but as a 'proof of concept' upgrade project it does work A-OK. To this day: HP EliteDesk 800 G4 DM 65W (TAA) Performance Results - UserBenchmark.

Hope this was helpful!

Thank you for that information. But I’m somewhat confused. You seem to suggest using an external adapter that somehow connects to a port typically used for storage devices (SSDs). Are there no ports available that would be appropriate for a graphics adapter? One configuration of this system includes an NVIDIA card. How is that connected? Couldn’t the port used for a facility-installed NVIDIA also be used for another card using the same interface?
