I have an EliteOne 840 G9 with an i5-12500 CPU. I know this model supports 12th, 13th, and 14th gen Intel CPUs with the LGA 1700 socket. Specifically, the HP support documents list the i9-14900 CPU as being one of the available CPUs. 

 

I'm wondering if the i9-14900 CPU is a plug and play upgrade or, since this PC only had the i5-12500, the BIOS might not have the microcode to support the i9-14900. Would a BIOS update would fix this?

Yes -the Core i9-14900 is an officially supported processor in the HP EliteOne 840 G9. as this Userbenchmark user shows: HP EliteOne 840 23.8 inch G9 All-in-One Desktop PC Performance Results - UserBenchmark.

 

HP's own specifications list the i9-14900 among the supported CPU options for this model, along with the 12th- and 13th-generation processors. HP even sells configurations of the EliteOne 840 G9 with the i9-14900 installed from the factory.

 

So, this is not a case where you're trying to put an unsupported CPU into the machine simply because it happens to use the same LGA1700 socket.

 

The BIOS question is nevertheless important.

 

Your i5-12500 is a 12th-generation processor, whereas the i9-14900 is a 14th-generation processor. The BIOS must contain the appropriate CPU initialization/microcode for the 14th-generation CPU. If your particular EliteOne was manufactured with the i5-12500 and has an older BIOS, I would update the BIOS to the latest HP BIOS available for the EliteOne 840 G9 before installing the i9-14900.

 

In other words, I would not make the CPU swap first and then hope a BIOS update will make it work.

 

HP's current specifications are reassuring here because they explicitly list:

 

  • Core i5-12500
  • Core i9-12900
  • Core i9-13900
  • Core i9-14900

 

and the other 12th/13th/14th-generation processors in the same EliteOne 840 G9 platform.

 

One other consideration: this is an all-in-one PC, so don't assume that an i9-14900 will perform exactly like an i9-14900 in a conventional desktop motherboard. HP's firmware can impose power and thermal limits appropriate to the EliteOne's cooling system. The CPU may therefore not sustain the same power levels you would see in a large desktop.

 

Before purchasing the CPU, I would like to see your current BIOS version. You can press Ctrl + Alt + S on the EliteOne, or run msinfo32 and give me the BIOS Version/Date.

 

If you provide that BIOS version, I can determine whether you should update the firmware first and whether there is any reason to be concerned about the i9-14900 upgrade on your particular machine.
