I had a strange issue on 3 laptops other day, and HP Support told me that the motherbord was failing.
I did a lot of research and testing - and my effort gave resoults.
It turned out it was the touch screen that was failing - but the only way to fix the motherboard / bios was to:
1) disconnect the failing touchscreen.
2) connect another touch screen (mine was broken - but worked half screen)
3) hard reset bios - (disconnect power cord, hold start button for 30 sec then release, and the bios resets).
I reproduced this failure, just connecting the bad touch screen - and the numlock was on and mouse not working again. I tried to hard reset bios with no screen attatched - did not work. I connected a broken screen, did hard reset and the numlock and mouse was fixed. I guess this failure can show on any HP laptop with touch screen.
