Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

Hello! I am new to PC upgrades, and had been idly considering trying to upgrade the graphics card in my PC when a game I play regularly announced that in about a year they'll be releasing a new expansion and with it a graphics update. They released some information regarding the minimum and recommended requirements, and I figured it was high time to start looking to upgrade based on that.

My PC is an HP Envy 750-429cb, with product specs here: https://support.hp.com/us-en/document/c05281680 I bought it refurbished, but to my knowledge there's no difference in my machine and what is on the information page.

What is being recommended is an NVIDIA GeForce RTX 2060 or higher if possible (they also recommend a different CPU but at that point it'd be easier to get a new PC altogether, I assume, and possibly cheaper). Now, from what I have seen in older conversations on this forum, my machine *should* be able to handle a GTX 1050 Ti without an upgrade to the PSU. I'd be alright getting an external PSU to augment what I have currently, though, if it is absolutely needed for a higher-end graphics card.

I briefly looked at some RTX 2060s, and honestly since they're not that much more expensive right now (as far as I could see anyway), it's a little more enticing to go for that even if it means I need additional PSU support.

Honestly, I would just like some guidance on what the best options for an upgrade would be--as I said, I'm totally new to this and would really appreciate any advice that can be given.

@wisegirl101,

Very good questions, and I'll do my best to provide the best possible answers for you.

Your HP ENVY Desktop - 750-439cb PC (X6F73AA) as fitted with the Odense2-S motherboard (SSID: 828A). is an aging legacy PC (6th gen Intel processor), but it is upgradeable. Your motherboard is 24-pin ATX-power enabled, meaning, you can swap its 300-watt uATX power supply with any industry standard ATX power supply, as long as you watch its dimensions (LxWxH) for fit inside your case.

An RTX 2060 is indeed a fine graphics card, and would provide a very decent gaming experience, as long as you don't go beyond high/ultra 1080p graphics settings. However, this card does require a 500-watt power supply with one 8-pin PCIe power cable.

For your convenience, here is an Amazon 500-watt power supply purchase example, which should fit in your desktop: https://www.amazon.com/EVGA-WHITE-Warranty-Supply-100-W1-0500-KR/dp/B00H33SFJU/ref=psdc_1161760_t3_B... -at least, this is what I would purchase if your desktop were my upgrade project (illustration not entirely to scale):

Hope this was helpful.
