OMEN 25L Desktop PC GT11-1000i / GT12-1000i (1N3Y3AV)

Unable to run Windows without a system hang. Unable to re-install the operating system without a system hang. Every time it halts, the led on the motherboard near the TypeC Gen1 writing lights up.

HP Omen 25L TypeC Gen1 led haltHP Omen 25L TypeC Gen1 led halt

  • latest BIOS was installed (886B   F.18 Rev.A)
  • CMOS reset was performed
  • all UEFI tests are running smooth and with success
  • the HDD cleaned using diskpart

I am unable to use a USB bootable device to launch the factory recovery process without having the system halting right at the beginning of the first setup screens. The colder the computer is, the further I can get in the process, but not beyond the HDD partition selection to install. Only a USB keyboard is plug with the bootable USB key, and the HDMI port for the screen. No USB C device is connected.

So far, I have not found a solution. Some users are reporting similar issues without known resolution. I have not found an explanation for this led to light up and the relation it has on the system halting. Anyone has details on this OMEN Oasis board? or any tips to avoid the issue?

Hi @calligrapheric,

Welcome to HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

The issues you're describing suggest a hardware-related problem, possibly with the motherboard, CPU, or power supply, exacerbated by thermal conditions. The lighting up of the Type-C Gen1 LED during a halt could indicate a fault with the power delivery or the chipset handling USB devices.

Here are steps you can take to troubleshoot and potentially resolve the issue.

Inspect Hardware for Faults

  • Thermal Check: Since you mentioned the colder the computer is, the farther you can progress, overheating might be an issue. Inspect and clean the CPU cooler, GPU, and other components for dust. Ensure proper thermal paste application on the CPU.
  • Power Supply Unit (PSU): Ensure the PSU is delivering stable and sufficient power. If you can, swap with a known good PSU for testing.
  • Connections and Peripherals: Reseat all power cables, RAM, GPU, and storage devices. Disconnect unnecessary peripherals.

BIOS Settings

  • Reset the BIOS to its default settings (you've done a CMOS reset already).
  • Disable Fast Boot and Secure Boot to ensure smoother compatibility during recovery/installation.
  • Check for a setting related to USB or Type-C controllers and disable it temporarily to see if it bypasses the halting.

Rule Out Software Corruption

  • Create a New Bootable Drive: Recreate the bootable USB drive using the latest version of the Windows Media Creation Tool. Corrupt installation media can sometimes cause these issues.
  • Try a Different OS Installer: Use a lightweight Linux distribution (like Ubuntu) to see if the issue persists during its installation. This helps rule out Windows-specific problems.

Advanced Diagnostics

  • Run Memory Tests using tools like Memtest86. Faulty RAM could cause the system to hang during the setup process.
  • Use third-party hardware diagnostic tools to stress test the CPU and GPU outside the operating system environment (e.g., from a bootable diagnostic USB).

Check Motherboard and Chipset

  • USB Type-C Gen1 LED: This LED lighting up could indicate a failure or conflict in the USB power delivery system. Check for signs of physical damage or loose connections near the Type-C port.
  • Disconnect USB Type-C devices (if any) and disable the corresponding controller in BIOS to see if this resolves the issue.

Factory Reset or Motherboard Repair

  • Factory Recovery: If factory recovery cannot proceed, consider using an external PC to install Windows on the HDD/SSD and then transfer it back to the OMEN.
  • Motherboard Inspection: A potential hardware fault on the motherboard, such as a short circuit or failing capacitor near the USB controller.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.

Hi @Raj_05,

I was able to perform many of the suggested tests and actions, with the exception of the PSU. I even ordered and installed a new motherboard. The problem is still appearing, the motherboard led still lights up when trying to install Windows.

Any other suggestions ?
