I updated my bios to F.20 8/26/24 before upgrading the processor to a Ryzen 9 5900X.  I now get the CPU Fan (90B) error on boot.  I can accept it and move on to a normal Windows 11 operation.  The HP troubleshooter software shows no CPU fan working properly.  I boot into the bios and the CPU fan is N/A but the bios thinks I have a pump and shows a steady rpm.  The CPU fan is physically running at a constant rpm and does not change in any tests or normal operation.  The CPU fan header is clearly labelled CPU/Pump Fan that I have been plugged into all along.  So with this version of bios the system thinks the CPU fan is missing and thinks I have a pump to run at a steady rpm.  How do I get a correct bios version for my situation?  I have no choice or jumpers to change.  Everything is fixed in the bios.

Greetings @eechip

Welcome to the HP Forum.

I'm guessing you upgraded the CPU fan/heatsink to deal with the 5900X.

Your PC's BIOS doesn't provide fan curve options so there is no way to fix the 90B startup error in the BIOS.

I would also imagine the continuous high fan speed while running Windows is annoying.

Maybe poke around the Net for Windows based fan speed control software.

I have never dealt with a fan speed problem so I can't provide a definitive fix.

@Bill_To,

Question for the OP:

Make sure that your HP Omen 30L GT13-1174 (328P0AA) as fitted with a Hana motherboard (SSID: 8876) got PWM (4-pin!) cooling fans installed in "F_FAN1" and "SYS_FAN" OR if you got an AIO cooling setup, plugged in to the "LC_FAN" + "CPU/Pump Fan".

Kind Regards,

The OP stated only a MB CPU/Pump Fan header exists on this MB.

I thought it was unusual to see no dedicated CPU fan header on the MB.

A MB CPU pump fan header will probably run at full speed when the BIOS does not provide fan curve adjustments.

I've also seen some HP MBs that can't deal with aftermarket fan speed profiles which cause the 90B fan error at startup.

It would be great if HP provided some user control in this area.

@Bill_To,

The OP's motherboard is a Hana motherboard.  I looked up its PWM configuration as I shared in my previous response.

I am still using the stock cooling fan that was originally from the factory plugged into the CPU/Pump Fan.  My fan setup has not changed, I just swapped processors for now and allowed the current bios update to install from windows update.  LC Fan was not and is not in use.

Thanks for any more input.

I have not upgraded any cooling or power supply yet.  Once the bios issue is resolved, I will put money into that.  I want to make sure everything is going to work first.

CPU fan - CPU/Pump Fan Header

Front Case Fan - F_Fan1 Header

Rear Case Fan - Sys_Fan Header

LC_Fan Header is unused

This was orginal connections and current connections.  unchanged

Sounds good.

@eechip,

Using the HP stock CPU cooler designed to cool a 65 watt TDP CPU on a 5900X is probably causing high fan speeds.

Check Temps using HWiNFO portable available Here.

I'm pretty sure the 90B fan error will persist after changing the CPU cooler. It's a HP BIOS thing; I am not aware of any way to stop this startup error.

HP mods the AMD MB CPU mounting points in your PC.

Your MB should use an Intel mounting system when installing a CPU heatsink or an AIO Liquid cooler.

Check this YouTuber's older videos where he does various upgrades to a HP 25L PC. The 25L and 30 L cases are similar. He does a Noctua air cooler and a Corsair AIO liquid cooler.
