Welcome to our HP Community forum!
Your HP OMEN 35L Gaming Desktop GT16-0xxx as fitted with the Wolant motherboard (SSID: 8CF4) is not compatible with the Ryzen 7 8700F or Ryzen 5 8400F -at least not without a BIOS update from HP, and as of now, HP does not officially support these CPUs.
Here's a breakdown of why:
1. CPU Architecture Compatibility:
All three CPUs (8700G, 8700F, 8400F) are based on the Zen 4 architecture and use the AM5 socket. So, physically and electrically, they're similar.
However:
OEM motherboards like HP's Wolant (SSID: 8CF4) often have strict CPU support lists, and only support CPUs explicitly validated by HP.
The Ryzen 7 8700F and Ryzen 5 8400F are recent additions to AMD's lineup, introduced in 2024, and lack integrated graphics (iGPU), unlike the 8700G.
2. HP BIOS Limitations:
HP does not provide user-accessible BIOS microcode updates to support newer CPUs outside of what the system shipped with or what HP has tested.
As of now:
The Wolant motherboard BIOS is tailored for G-series Ryzen 8000 APUs, such as the 8700G and 8600G.
There is no public indication that HP has added support for non-G CPUs like the 8700F or 8400F.
3. No iGPU = Potential Problem:
Since the 8700F and 8400F lack integrated graphics, they require a discrete GPU to display anything.
If HP’s BIOS/firmware expects an APU with integrated graphics, a CPU-only chip may cause POST failure or black screen, even with a dedicated GPU installed.
Conclusion:
Not recommended to swap in a Ryzen 7 8700F or Ryzen 5 8400F into the HP OMEN 35L GT16-0xxx with the Wolant 8CF4 motherboard unless:
HP explicitly updates the BIOS to support them (unlikely based on HP’s historical practices).
Or, a BIOS mod is used (which voids warranty and is risky on OEM systems).
Alternatives:
For now, stick with officially supported Ryzen 8000G APUs, such as:
Ryzen 7 8700G
Ryzen 5 8600G
