@ZacSr, Welcome to HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.
If your HP PLDS DVDRW DU8AESH drive isn’t working, let’s walk through some targeted troubleshooting steps. Let me know exactly what kind of problem you're seeing (e.g., not detected, won't read discs, won't open), but here’s a general checklist to start with:

🔍 1. Check if the Drive is Recognized by Windows

  • Open Device Manager (Right-click Start > Device Manager).
  • Expand DVD/CD-ROM drives.
    • Do you see PLDS DVDRW DU8AESH listed?
      • If yes, does it have a yellow triangle or error code?

If there’s an error like Code 19, Code 39, or Code 41, it’s likely a registry issue.

🛠️ 2. Fix Registry (If Device Detected but Not Working)

You can try the classic registry fix:Steps:

  1. Press Windows + R, type regedit, press Enter.
  2. Navigate to:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Class\ {4D36E965-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}

  1. On the right pane, delete these if they exist:
    • UpperFilters
    • LowerFilters
  2. Close Registry Editor and restart your PC.

⚠️ Always back up the registry before editing.

💿 3. Test with a Known Good Disc

  • Insert a working DVD or CD.
  • Does it spin or show anything in File Explorer?
    • If nothing shows up: try multiple types of discs (data, movie, music CD).
    • If it spins but doesn’t read, it could be a dirty or failing laser.

🧪 4. Use HP Hardware Diagnostics

HP has a pre-boot tool to test hardware including optical drives.Steps:

  1. Turn off the PC.
  2. Turn it on and press F2 repeatedly to enter HP PC Hardware Diagnostics UEFI.
  3. Look for a Component Test > Optical Drive and run it.

Let me know if it's missing from there.

🔄 5. Try Updating or Reinstalling the Driver

In Device Manager:

  • Right-click the DVD drive > Uninstall device.
  • Reboot your PC – Windows will reinstall the driver.

🧰 6. BIOS/UEFI Check

Restart and go to BIOS (F10 during boot on most HP systems). Check if the optical drive is listed.

  • If it’s not listed in BIOS, this might be a hardware issue (loose cable, dead drive).

Final Notes

  • If you're using Windows 10 or 11, note that Windows Media Player no longer natively supports DVD playback unless codecs are installed.
  • For DVD video playback, use a player like VLC Media Player.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.
