I need some help with my HP Pavilion Desktop 570-p014. I used it the other day and everything was fine. My partner used it later in the day and when she was done she put it in sleep mode. When I tried to turn it back on it wouldn't come on. The power button on top was unresponsive and the only way to get it to come back on was unplug it and then plug it back in.

Once it is plugged back it the green power light on the back lights up. When I press the power button it starts to boot back up and a weird "electrical" static noise comes from the power supply box inside then it shuts off on 20-30 seconds. I have  cleaned it, replaced the power cord and I still get the same results.

Any ideas?   THANKS!!!

Try searching on line.  You should be able to find a new PS from elsewhere, and for much cheaper too.

You can use a larger wattage PS, just make sure of the physical size (to be able to fit properly) and the proper connectors.

I did a quick search on Amazon and there were 'HP compatible power supplies' in many different size and with different connectors.

Try this...

unplug the A/C power cord.  Open the case.

Find the CMOS battery (size and shape of a nickle), pop it out.  Wait 10 minutes (1 hr to be REALLY sure), then put the CMOS battery back in, connect the A/C cord and power up.

You will probably get a time/date error (this is expected), enter the good info, then test.

Okay Rick. THANKS for the quick reply and I will give it a try and check back in. I will leave the battery out for an hour.

Stay tuned!!!

Okay......did as you suggested and the results are the same. It stayed on for about 45 seconds, made that sound from the power supply box and then shut off. It didn't have time to reboot before shutting off so I didn't get any kind of error message.

The next step is to test/replace the power supply.

I have something like this.... (but I paid maybe $20 Cdn several years ago)

Most HP desktops don't use standard power connectors so even that won't do you much good.

The power supply is the most likely component to fail, so I suspect that is your problem.

As I am a long time HP reseller, I have space HP power supplies that I keep in stock (or remove from desktops with other issues).

See if you can swap out the power supply with another HP desktop and see what happens.  Make sure the connectors are the same.  Take photos BEFORE you unplug anything.  Another idea it to use tape and markers and label the connector on the motherboard and power supply with the same letters, ie "A" connects to "A", "B" connects to "B" etc.

Maybe contact HP and see if they can ship you a replacement power supply?

Let me know.

another long short, test the outlet with a voltmeter.

Or, try moving the PC to another room to be on another circuit

I have tried it in different rooms with the same result. We do have another spare HP desktop but unfortunately the power supply is completely different so that won't help much. I will do the other things you suggest and see what happens. Gotta find a replacement power supply and will reach out to HP as well. Will keep you posted.

THANKS!!!

HP said they no longer have that power supply listed to be purchased. I am assuming I need to get the same wattage in a replacement power supply? The one that is in there now is a 180W.

Rick......Thanks for all your help! It took a while for it to arrive but the new power supply finally got here, I installed it and everything is back to normal and the computer is running just fine!!

My only other question is what should I do with the old one that doesn't work? Trash it? Try and get it refurbished and have it as a back-up? Any thoughts/suggestions?
