HP Pavilion 590-p0054
Microsoft Windows 11

My girlfriend has a Hp Pavilion 590-P0054. It has all the OG Parts. Never upgraded. Then she met me and I wanted to upgrade her computer. So I started by upgrading the Power Supply. (OG: 180W) (New: 400W) Next I upgraded the RAM. (OG: 1 stick of 8 GB) (New: 2 sticks of 8 GB = 16 GB) Next I installed a GPU. (OG: None) (New: Nvidia GTX 1660 Super) So far everything works great! Much faster computer and everything runs smoothly. Now I want to upgrade the CPU! (OG: Intel i3 - 8100) (New: Intel i7 - 7700) After I installed the new CPU, I try to start the desktop. But it won't start. So I started troubleshooting. Checking the power cable. Checking to make sure everything was plugged in like it was supposed to be. Everything was good. So now I'm thinking maybe its drawing too much power and the power supply isn't strong enough. So i try taking out 1 stick of ram. Wont turn on. I try taking out the GPU. Still wont turn on. All it does is the first time I press the power button, the button light turns on for like a second, then turns off. (It's a white light) And the fans spin for like 2 - 3 secs. And anytime after this that I try to turn it on, the fans spin like that but the light does not turn on again unless I unplug it and plug it back in. The only way I can get it to turn on properly again is if I put the Old CPU back in. So IMO, It's either not compatible with this CPU, or its the Power Supply not giving out enough power. What do you think?

@Chet-Brashear,

Welcome to our HP Community forum!

The answer is simple enough: an HP Pavilion 590-P0054 is not compatible with 7th gen Intel Core processors, only 8th and 9th gen Intel Core processors.

Ok. Is there a list of exact models that are compatible? According to the research I've done, the highest the 590-P0054 can handle based on tested done by HP themselves is the i7-9700. So this would mean that my i7-7700 falls under what is compatible.

@Chet-Brashear,

I don't follow your logic: because a 9th gen Intel Core processor (i7-9700) is compatible with the 590-P0054, it doesn't follow that therefore a 7th gen Intel Core processor (i7-7700) should also be compatible.

That is not how it works.

Your HP Pavilion 590-p0054 (3LB89AA) as fitted with the Lincs motherboard (SSID: 843B), has the Intel H370 chipset.  This chipset is only compatible with 8th and 9th gen Intel processors -not 7th gen, or 10th gen, as spelled out by HP: HP Desktop PCs - motherboard specifications, Lincs | HP® Support:

Mind you, this is not a comprehensive compatible processor list.  Your PC also manages to be compatible with 95-watt TDP processors, such as the i7-8700K, i7-9700K, and other "K" processors -but I digress.

Again, the i7-7700 is not compatible with your PC.

Kind Regards,
