Hello,
I want to upgrade my RAM to 16GB, but am not sure on compatibility issues. My current RAM specs are:
8 GB
- Amount: 8 GB
- Speed: PC4-21300 MB/s
- Type: DDR4-2666
Memory upgrade information
- Dual channel (2 DIMMs per channel) memory architecture
- Four DDR4 UDIMM (288-pin) sockets
- Supports PC4-19200 (DRR4-2400)
- Supports 4 GB and 8 GB DDR4 UDIMMs
- Supports up to 4 GB on 32-bit systems
note: 32-bit systems cannot address a full 4.0 GB of memory.
- Supports up to 32 GB (unbuffered) on 64-bit computers
note: Maximum memory shown reflects the capability of the hardware and can be limited further in the operating system.
This PC has 2 slots, with the one already containing the 8GB RAM. Can I just add an additional 8GB RAM to the 2nd slot, or do I need to buy 2 new 8GB RAM in order to avoid compatibility issues? If only one, then does anyone know what would be compatible for an upgrade, as to not conflict with the already install RAM? Also, does single or dual rank matter?
If you need more info, let me know.
Thank you for your help!

HP use few suppliers therefore RAM stick on your machine could be depending on available stocks. Yes, you can only add 1 stick with 8GB to get total 16GB. Quick and easy: open the case, record brand and type of existing RAM stick and buy a same one. Some software tools also alow you to check brand and specs of existing RAM and buy a similar stick.
>>> Also, does single or dual rank matter?
Dual channels RAM normally run better than single channel RAM even each channel only runs at 1/2 speed. In theory, we need both sticks the same, even same brand,
Regards.

Hi BH,
Sorry to bother you again, but I have another question. I’ll provide some more detailed info, as to receive your best opinion. This is what I have:
PC: HP Pavilion 590-P0024
RAM: Micron MTA8ATF1G64AZ-2G6E1, 8GB, 1RX8, PC4-2666V-UA2-11
So, as you said, find exact same brand & model, and just add 2nd RAM stick in available slot. The only one I’ve found so far was a re-furbished one:
Ebay item 183125941557
I know that Crucial is a division of Micron, so I took a look at what they had and found this:
Crucial pavilion 590-p0024/CT12480595
Crucial pavilion 590-p0024/CT12480591
What is the difference between PC4-2666V and DDR4-2400?
Should I get the refurbished RAM since it’s identical?
If I get the single Crucial, will that have issues with my current RAM? (it’s dual & mine is single)
If I get the 2-pack Crucial, will that be the equivalent of having the 2-8GB Micron?
What do you suggest? Thanks again for your time!
