I am looking to upgrade my CPU. I have a Corsair CX750M power supply installed, so power will not be an issue. I see that HP says you can install a Intel 7-8XX series. Yet the system says it only can go up to a 2.9 GHz chip. But this came with a 3.2 GHz chip installed (over what HP says the motherboard can take). So I want to know what is the max clock speed that is possible for this system.

Hi:

I'm thinking that must be due to the turbo frequency.

It looks like the fastest processor you can install is the i7-870.

Your PC's i3-550 does not have the additional turbo frequency.

I have posted the side by side comparison below...

There is an important note when you upgrade to a 1st generation i5 or i7 quad core processor, and that is you must have a discrete video card or you will have no graphics.

The quad core processors cannot use the onboard Intel graphics like the dual core processors can.

The product specs for your PC indicate that it did not come with a discrete video card, so if you have not added one already, you would need to install a supported graphics card before upgrading the processor.
