HP Pavilion AIO - 23-p114 with Tray optical drive pn 537385=800

My original optical drive is not recognized in BIOS

How can I confirm that it needs to be replaced? Does this model Fail Frequently?

Can I replace it with a slot in model? what about the Bezel? do slot in bezels exist for my computer?

Can it be a blue ray model replacement?

What are the form factor requirements?

Thanks Mr. Robot

As I have taken on this endeavor, I have learned alot about this senario...

Mt First situation was a broken Super Multi DVD writer Model GTOBN HP P/N 537385-800 That came with my computer.

The drive was not listed in Device Manger or recognized in BIOS.

This situation was resolved by purchasing another drive (the same model) installed and all was well. Yay!

Then. for some reason became obsessed with playing a retail blu ray disk on this machine, Thinking...

It can't be that hard...

I Purchased a second optical Drive, a HP PAVILION DV6 7000 SERIES INTERNAL BLU-RAY OPTICAL DRIVE BC-5550H SKU1361917

I swaped the face plate and stop barcket from my original, broken drive, and destroyed the original broken drive, in the style of the Office Space Movie, where they perform a beat down on the office printer (not sure if it was an HP).

I now have 2 ODD drives, complete with face plates and brackets, Though not recommended, they are "hot swapable" as i did not tighten the cool spring loaded screw.

I then eagerly tried to play the only Blu ray disk I own... Batman, the Dark night, which I got at a thrift store.

alas, it did not play. At this point I thought that I needed a hardware specific driver. And then wasted hours trying to find one from Optaric, the OEM of the BD drive, that is now longer in business.

Turns out that the drive was working just fine, with the Plain old Windows driver from 2006? I just didnt have the software to play retail Blu ray movie disk. They want too much for Powerlink DVD 15, for me to play 1 movie, that I have already seen, and didn't really like anyway. No offense to Heath, or whatever is name was, RIP.

Capture.JPG

Turns out, I don't want to watch Blu ray movies on my AIO PC. I just wanted to prove that I could.

Capture2.JPG

The drive reads and writes DVDs. Reads Blu ray disks. Writing BD disks is unproven. (I dont have any to test yet)

The harware theoretically, should play Blu ray movies, with additional software. I briefly tried VLC, but I need an addon of some sort, but wasn't real clear on how to add it on.

I am now going to expiriment with writing high capacity BD data disks!

Thanks to you both, David and Mr Robot for helping me with this.

I also hope that this post might somehow help someone else save some time.

Hi @tmapp,

Good Day. A warm welcome to the HP community. I reviewed the case regarding problems with the optical drive that is faulty. Superb description, brilliant troubleshooting and terrific observations made before posting. Kudos to you for that. 🙂 I will be delighted to assist you here.

For better clarity, and to assist you correctly, I would require more information regarding this:

  • Did you check the product specifications of the machine?

For now, let me keep you posted about a few things.

Please note that HP does not recommend upgrading either the operating system or the computer’s hardware as the components that were initially installed with the unit are certified by HP for optimal performance. However, as you are very technically inclined, I would still request you to consult a local technician like Best Buy or Staples before proceeding to upgrade the unit.

Now coming back to the question about the DVD drive, the product specs link: http://hp.care/2jgg1T8 is very clear about the supported DVD drive type. Blueray drivers are not supported.

As far as form factors and other information are concerned please visit HP part surfer via this link: http://hp.care/2tp77rQ and select the country. Then enter the product#  of the computer and follow the on-screen instructions. You might even locate a phone number to call HP. Once you follow the on-screen instructions you will get the list of parts supported by this PC with their part numbers listed.

Make a note of the list of supported optical drives with their part numbers and order one of these. This should be a great fit for the computer and should work like a charm.

Hope this helps. Let me know how it goes. To simply say thanks, please click the "Thumbs Up" button to give me a Kudos to appreciate my efforts to help. If this helps, please mark this as Accepted Solution as it will help several others with the same issue to get it resolved without hassles.

Take care and have a blessed week ahead. 🙂

Cheers!

Thank you for your thoughtful reply

The Partfinder is a great resourse and i was able to determine the form factor of the installed and failed drive to be a SATA 12.7mm form factor optical drive

Under the specs page that you referenced I see the unavailability of blu ray for the drive...

The only drive listed for my Pavillion 23 Model #: 23-p114 Product #: J4V83AA#ABA is the one that i have (460510-800)

(also listed is 537385-800 but i think it is the same drive without a bezel)

Are you saying that this indicates that the system will not support  a blu ray ODD ?

My intent is to buy a ODD with blu ray functionality, preferably one that HP uses in similar models and hope that the drive is picked up by the system and installs the correct drivers for me.

Again thanks for your help!

Just to report back...

I purchased a replacement drive the same as my orginal broken one:

Super Multi DVD writer Model GTOBN HP P/N 537385-800

and it installed and worked perfectly.

I also purchased an Optiaric Blue ray drive thar was std equipment for a

HP Pavillion Laptop dV6-7000 Laptop:

HP PAVILION DV6 7000 SERIES INTERNAL BLU-RAY OPTICAL DRIVE BC-5550H SKU1361917

It booted past BIOS and recognized the BD drive, but was not fully functional due to generic windows driver.

Unfortunately I could not find a suitable windows 10 driver, which is understandable because

The Laptop that it came from does not suport windows 10

Still Looking for a suitable driver or another drive to enable my Pavillion 23 AIO to play blu ray disks (and burn DVDs)?

Any guidence or sugetions appreciated!

PS: anyone think this will work...

HP ZBook 17 SATA BD-ROM CD-RW DVD±RW Blu-ray Combo Drive UJ262 735600-001 ?

Hi! @tmapp, I am the Mr.Robot. It looks like you were interacting with @DavidSMP, but he is out of the office today, so I'll take over from here.

As you mentioned replaced the optical drive with Blu-ray drive and it is still not getting detected.

Is the optical drive getting detected in device manager?

Try the steps recommended below.

Right-click the Start button > Command Prompt (Admin)

Then, at the command prompt type the following ( you can copy and paste) and press "Enter":

reg.exe add "HKLM\System\CurrentControlSet\Services\atapi\Controller0" /f /v EnumDevice1 /t REG_DWORD /d 0x00000001

Restart the computer.

Uninstall the CD/DVD drivers from device manager.

Hold Windows key + Letter R key.

Run dialog box would open type devmgmt.msc

Device manager window will open.

Expand CD/DVD from the list.

Right click on the DVD drive click uninstall.

Restart your PC and check if the DVD drive is ejecting by itself.

Try reseating the DVD drive as last resort.

If the issue still persists after trying out the steps it is a hardware issue with the optical drive on your PC.

Please contact HP support for service options.

Link to contact HP.

If the solution provided worked for you, please mark accepted solution for this post.
