Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

First time here. Not sure I'm in the right place?

I have a HP Pavilion with 4 GB of Ram and wand to go to 8 GB. Installed now is:

DMS Data Memory Systems Replacement for HP Inc. 516336-001 Pavilion dv7-2019ca 2GB DMS Certified Memory 200 Pin DDR2-800 PC2-6400 256x64 CL6 1.8V SODIMM - DMS

Can someone tell me what part NAME and NUMBER etc to purchase for go to 4 GB sticks x 2?

Thanks,

keepers51

@keepers51,

Yes, I have upgraded to SSDs in both laptops and desktops.

This is not too complicated, but if you have never done it before, it may appear to be more challenging than it really is.

Please take a look at this YouTube instructional video, which I think explains the SSD upgrade quite well: (1923) How To Clone Laptop Hard Drive To Solid State Drive - Macrium Reflect Tutorial to 2.5 Inch SS.... Btw, don't use the eCommerce links listed beneath the video. Just go to Amazon, Newegg, etc. to find an SSD that meets your budget.  You are more than welcome to ask for my opinion or to provide you with recommendations.

Anyway, the upgrade steps outlined in the aforementioned video should work for any laptop.  Also, please read through the HP manual starting on p. 56: Hard Drive - HP PAVILION DV7 Maintenance And Service Manual [Page 56] | ManualsLib.

Hope this was helpful.

Kind Regards,

@keepers51,

Welcome to our HP User Forum!

Your HP Pavilion dv7-2019ca according to: https://www.manua.ls/hp/pavilion-dv7-2019ca/specifications and: https://www.manualslib.com/manual/71810/Hp-Pavilion-Dv7.html?page=29#manual, can be upgraded with up to 2 x 4GB of DDR2 PC2-6400, 800 MHz, Non-ECC, Unbuffered, SODIMM, 200-pin RAM sticks.

The OEM HP p/n for the 4GB RAM sticks: 516337-001, but they are difficult to get and very pricey.

There are quality replacement DDR2 4GB RAM options available either new or used, and the following links are just examples.  New: EMMCRAM 8GB (2 x 4GB) PC2-6400 DDR2-800 200PIN SoDIMM Laptop RAM Non-ECC Unbuffered Notebook Memory ..., or used: https://www.ebay.com/itm/284664634688?hash=item4247559d40:g:OHMAAOSw9r9iC3V~&amdata=enc%3AAQAHAAAA4A....

Hope this was helpful.

Thank you NonSequitur777. I have placed an order and hope for the best. Trying to figure out what works is not an easy task. For me, anyway.

If I am successful I might try upgrading my HDD to Solid State. Do you know about those things as well?

Best regards,

NonSequitur777 - thanks for your recommendation. I installed the new memory and booted without problem.

However I have now been made to understand my Windows10 is 32 bit and the extra ram is unusable on my machine.

Thanks fir the help.

@keepers51,

That is unfortunate, but it is fixable -though you’ll need to perform a so-called 'clean install' to get to the 64-bit version of Windows 10 from the 32-bit one. Unfortunately, there’s no other direct upgrade path.

This means that you should back up any files/pictures, etc. and transfer that information to a backup drive.

You can use the same Windows license to upgrade to Windows 10 64-bit from 32-bit, but it requires reinstallation – here's how: How to upgrade from 32-bit to 64-bit version of Windows 10 | Windows Central
