I have a HP Pavilion Desktop - 500-424 that runs too slow for the podcast & video editing that I'm now doing. Can I swap out the motherboard for a faster one? How do I know which motherboards are compatible with the same slot?

Welcome to our HP community forum!
Honestly, it's time to retire your HP Pavilion 500-424 Desktop PC (J4W40AA) altogether, and buy something much more recent and faster -but still do it in a way that won't break the bank, such as this HP EliteDesk 705 G4 SFF PC ("AMD Ryzen 5 PRO 2400G 16GB 256GB Wifi win 11 Pro") purchase example via a trusted eBay Seller: HP EliteDesk 705 G4 SFF PC- AMD Ryzen 5 PRO 2400G 16GB 256GB Wifi win 11 Pro | eBay.
The AMD Ryzen 5 PRO 2400G (4-Cores, 8-Threads, 3.60 GHz up to 3.90 GHz) runs circles around the AMD A8-6410 (4-Cores, 4-Threads, 2.00 GHz up to 2.40 GHz): UserBenchmark: AMD A8-6410 APU R5 Graphics vs Ryzen 5 PRO 2400G Vega, just one example what you need.
Anyway, that is what I would recommend.
Kind Regards,
