Hi, I'm wanting to upgrade my ssd and this was the one I am looking at. I just want to make sure if this is compatible or not but I am fairly computer illiterate. My PC is the HP Pavilion Gaming - TG01-0023w.

Hi:

The Samsung 990 Evo should work fine, but it will not run at its maximum advertised read/write speeds from your PC's PCIe Gen 3.0 NVMe slot.

This table shows the maximum transfer speeds each PCIe slot generation can provide.

Great, thank you! My next question if you don’t mind answering, do I just need to copy my OS onto a usb? I remove the old ssd, insert new ssd, then install the OS? Or would I need to install the OS before slotting the ssd in?

You're very welcome.

You can't copy your OS to a USB flash drive to reinstall Windows on the new SSD.

If you don't want to use the HP cloud recovery tool to reinstall the HP factory image on the new SSD and reinstall your files and programs, then you will have to clone the existing drive's contents to the new SSD using cloning software and a USB3/USB-C to NVMe SSD enclosure.

You can use the Samsung Magician software to clone the existing drive to the new Samsung drive.

Samsung Magician Software Download | Samsung Semiconductor Global

Make sure you set up the program to clone from a smaller drive to a larger one, or you will end up with 750 GB of unallocated space.

This is the type of enclosure you can use to put the new drive into:

Amazon.com: SSK Aluminum M.2 NVME SATA SSD Enclosure Adapter, USB 3.2 Gen 2 (10 Gbps) to NVME PCI-E ...

After the cloning process has successfully completed, you can remove the 256 GB SSD and install the new 1 TB SSD.

If you would rather use the HP cloud recovery tool to install the HP factory image on the new SSD, here is an info link for how to use the utility.  You will need a 32 GB USB flash drive.

You can download the software from the Microsoft Store.

Make the USB recovery drive now, so it's ready to go when you get your new drive.
