It seems my motherboard has crashed. I found a replacement motherboard (exact same part number) on Amazon.com, but someone told me that HP motherboards are proprietary by serial number and if I put a new motherboard in it might not work because serial numbers won't match. Is this true? Am I wasting my time and money by purchasing a motherboard and trying to install it?

If your sure the motherboard is non-functional, then OK. Can you state the problem(s).
It has been the experience within the forums that an exact replacement board will work.
Use caution removed the CPU chip and re-installing it. If you separate the chip from the heatsink, be sure to clean the surfaces and apply new thermal grease. Follow guidelines for such.
