Hello,
I have a HP Pavillion Gaming Desktop TG01-1xxx and am looking to upgrade my graphics card from a Nvidia GTX 1650 to an RTX 3070. However, the recommended power supply for an RTX 3070 is 650W and my current power supply is 400W. Is it possible to upgrade the power supply to the necessary amount without completely replacing the Motherboard and other components? Ultimately, I just want to upgrade to a better graphics card in the least expensive manner possible.
Here are my system specifications:
CPU: Intel Core I5-10400 F
GPU: GTX 1650
SSD: WD Black SN770 NVMe PCIe M.2 2TB
RAM: Crucial CP32G4DFRA32A.M16FF 2x31.5GB
MTB: HP Pavilion Gaming Desktop TG01-1xxx

Hi @HalenFrost,
Welcome to HP Support Community.
Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.
Upgrading your HP Pavilion Gaming Desktop to accommodate an RTX 3070 graphics card involves a few considerations.
Power Supply Upgrade:
Compatibility with Case and Components:
- Before upgrading, ensure that your case can accommodate a larger power supply unit (PSU) physically. Check the dimensions and form factor (usually ATX or SFX) to match it with a suitable PSU.
PSU Wattage and Connectors:
- The RTX 3070 typically requires a PSU with at least 650W and specific PCIe power connectors (usually one or two 8-pin connectors). Check if the new PSU you're considering has these connectors and sufficient wattage.
Motherboard Compatibility:
- Generally, upgrading the PSU does not require replacing the motherboard or other components unless there are specific compatibility issues (like very old motherboards with proprietary connectors). Your HP Pavilion Gaming Desktop TG01 should support standard ATX power supplies.
Steps to Upgrade:
Selecting a PSU:
- Choose a reputable brand with a power output of at least 650W to comfortably handle the RTX 3070 and any other components in your system.
- Ensure the physical dimensions of the PSU fit in your case.
Installing the PSU:
- Power off your PC and disconnect all cables.
- Remove the side panel of your case.
- Unscrew the current PSU from the case and disconnect all cables from the motherboard, GPU, drives, and other components.
- Install the new PSU by securing it in place with screws and connecting the necessary cables to your motherboard, GPU, drives, etc. Ensure all connections are secure.
GPU Installation:
- After replacing the PSU, remove the GTX 1650 and install the RTX 3070 into the PCIe slot on your motherboard.
- Connect the necessary PCIe power cables from the PSU to the RTX 3070.
Power On and Check:
- Power on your PC and check if everything is functioning properly.
- Install the latest drivers for your RTX 3070 from Nvidia's website.
Considerations:
Physical Space: Ensure your case can fit the RTX 3070. Measure the dimensions to make sure there's enough clearance.
Cooling: Check if your case has adequate airflow to handle the higher heat output of the RTX 3070.
By following these steps and considerations, you should be able to upgrade your HP Pavilion Gaming Desktop to accommodate an RTX 3070 without needing to replace the motherboard or other components unnecessarily.
I hope this helps.
Take care and have a good day.
