Hey guys, i own HP ProDesk 400 G3 MT with Core I5 6500.  Recenetly i came across good offer for Core I5 7600, only for few euros. So i wanted to try this upgrade, but i am not sure if my motherboard supports 7th gen cpus. Have anybody tried putting 7th gen cpus in this computer?

Hi:

All the official information I could find on the 400 G3, is that only Intel 6th gen core processors are supported.

Chapter 2, page 10 has the list of supported processors.

This benchmark site shows no one has installed an Intel 7th gen core processor in the model series, so my assumption would be it will not work, because someone would have reported it on there if it did.

Yes i also found out that people only use 6th gen cpus in this pc. But i would like to know why it wont support 7th gen? Motherboard should be basic H110 chipset board and H110 supports both 6th and 7th gen.

I wouldn't know exactly why a 7th gen CPU would not be supported.

Probably HP has locked down the BIOS to not accept the processor and does not provide any processor microcode BIOS updates to support a 7th gen core processor.

The thing I don't understand is that the higher end Prodesk 600 G3's and Elitedesk 800 G3's fully support the 7th gen core processors.

There is another thing I don't understand...

Look at all the release notes for the 400 G3 MT BIOS updates...

v2.18 has this entry...

Version: 02.18 Rev.A

Fixed in this release: -Rollback the CPU microcode for Intel 6th generation processors (Skylake) to 0xBA, and 7th generation processors (Kaby Lake) to 0x5E as they may introduce higher than expected reboots and other unpredictable system behavior.

Personally, I don't see why one wouldn't work in theory, but there is no way I can guarantee an Intel 7th gen core processor will work because there is no place I can find where someone has actually installed one and reported it did or didn't.

I think the existing evidence is against you.

Yessir thanks for help. There is only one way to found out, trying to buy some cheap cpu a test it. When i get my hands on something i will let you know if it worked or no.

You're very welcome.

Yes, that would be the only way to know for sure and that would be great if you can let us know the results.
