HP ProDesk 600 G5 Small Form Factor PC
Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

Hi HP Fam!

Got aquired a Prodesk 600 G5 SFF (still coming in the mail) and would love to stick an RTX A2000 based on this video

https://youtu.be/3HDpR7FZgAw?si=hS5W0_8dmu1CQcMn

The dude seems to have a Elitedesk 800 G4 which as far as I can tell ought to have a similar specifications motherboard wise specifically the PCIE lanes and it pulls just under the 180W that PSU can provide.

Wondered if anyone had any experience or suggestions and if anyone had luck finding out what model PSU we can stick in it? I've found l08417-002 which is a 250W and wondered if that could fit as I saw that in a Elitedesk 800 G4/G5 that came into my workshop and it looked compact enough but unsure otherwise.

Also, SFF wise, Prodesk 600 G5 vs Elitedesk 800 G5 both running I7 9700, which is would be better in the long run? Much difference really? Can I stick that 250w psu mentioned above into that 800?

Thanks

Watto

@WattoWatson,

Welcome to our peer-to-peer HP Community Forum!

Between the two options you mentioned, I would recommend the HP EliteDesk 800 G5 SFF.

As a matter of fact, the HP EliteDesk 800 G5 SFF was one of my favorite upgrade projects: Solved: Upgrading HP EliteDesk 800 G5 SFF Part II - HP Support Community - 8720291.  Btw, I installed an i7-9700KF, then an i9-9900KF, and finished with an i9-9900KS.

Interestingly, out of all my HP EliteDesk 800 G5 SFF UserBenchMark scores, when I tried the i7-9700KF, it scored better than the i9 processors and still holds the UBM top spot: HP EliteDesk 800 G5 SFF Performance Results - UserBenchmark.

[EDIT:] And yes, you can use the 250-watt power supply (p/n: L08417-004/002) or, better still, a 400-watt power supply with p/n: 942332-001, (L04618-800) with one 6+2-pin PCIe power cable, and a 500-watt power supply, with p/n: L77487-003 (L89233-001), the latter being equipped with two 6+2-pin PCIe power cables.

I was just reading for you're post over the last 24 hours and found it quite helpful and tipped me over the edge into grabbing the Elite ontop of the Pro I already had coming lol. I've read the Elite should have the a 250W stock standard but the seller states it has a 180w so it will be interesting.

End result one day if I can find a good price 9700K will be to do a similar thing.

Hope to replace fans and whatever else I can for efficiently if you have any recommendations or thoughts on what to look out for!

Still going to document the process as best I can and see whats interchangeable for future users where possible as there is little documentation available For either model, especially the Prodesk 600 G5 which seems to be very similar to an Elitedesk 800 G4.

Any idea on model numbers for HDMI expansion io port that would be available for both models?

@WattoWatson,

Both the ProDesk 600 G5 SFF and the HP EliteDesk 800 G4 SFF have two DP (DisplayPort) and one optional DP/HDMI port:

Another brilliant video I have checked out!

Glad I jumped on the Elite and I think the Pro will become a decent sever/media station at this rate.

Do you know the part numbers for said HDMI expansion ports that will be compatible with both models?

Have you ever come across a list of supported or tested GPU's?

The RTXA2000 will certainly atm be the dearest part of my build but wouldnt mind exploring options til I can find a decently priced unit here in Australia.

Thanks

@WattoWatson,

The HDMI I/O option card part number for both desktops is: L38153-001 (L25757-001, 914969-013, 906318-002, L32387-001).

But why not use a DP to HDMI adapter, like this:

With a 250-watt power supply, you can power many low-profile graphics cards, the best being the RTX A2000 6GB/12GB and the low profile GTX 1650.

[EDIT:] With a 400-watt power supply, this low profile RTX 4060 (if it fits dimensionally: 182 mm length) would be a sure winner: GIGABYTE RTX 4060 Low Profile OC Specs | TechPowerUp GPU Database.

You can find additional GPU compatibility information via UserBenchMark: UserBenchmark: HP ProDesk 600 G5 SFF Compatible Components, and: UserBenchmark: HP EliteDesk 800 G4 SFF Compatible Components.

Mind you, many SFF-platform super Users hook up high-end graphics cards externally, like I did.

Mate you are a wealth of knowledge on these units!

I suppose the idea of the hdmi io expansion port is flexibility and keeping it as low profile as possible, the units already have DP available to HDMI on the side would be great.

Ultimate goal is to keep both at this rate untouched on the outside as possible so any external modifications would be on the end of the try list if needed.

Any advice for the prodesk 600 G5 at all? Any models for compatible psus at all?

Any advice on any fans or replacement heatsinks you may recommend or have used?

When upgrading the psus if they don't have a 6 or 6+2 connector would you recommend any sata to 6 or 8 pin cables or anything?

With the base 240w if it comes in the Elitedesk 800 thats still in the mail, does it have a 6 or 6+2 connection or can I use a sata to 6 or 8 pin cable?

If I plug a card that needs that into the unit will it work at the 75w I hope it pulls from the pcie or will it not function at all? Still rather new to all this sorry!

Thanks somuch

@WattoWatson,

There are three 'official' power supplies for an HP ProDesk 600 G5 SFF: 180, 250 and 310-watt.

The standard, 180-watt PSU has p/n: L29203-001 / L08404-004 / L29203-001 / 901765-003, and its dimensions are: 85 x 52 x 200mm.

The 310-watt power supply (as best as I could ascertain) has p/n: 901772-004 / 937516-004 and its dimensions are: 95mm x 73mm x 165mm. However, these dimensions are larger than the 180-watt PSU, so you'll have to doublecheck if this will actually fit in your HP ProDesk 600 G5 SFF.

Now, I did find a 450-watt power supply which appears to be compatible -at least looking at its "P2" power connector (7-pin), with p/n: L80890-003 / M09029-003, and its dimensions are identical as the 310-watt PSU: 95mm x 72mm x 165mm.

Since I haven't worked with an HP ProDesk 600 G5 SFF before, it looks to me that upgrading its power supply is going to be a trial-and-error process, I'm afraid.

Kind Regards,
