I am trying to program the programmable key on my Envy laptop (F12 key, looks like 3 overlapping squares).
I have downloaded HP Programmable Key app from the Windows Store. When I try to set the application for the key to open, I receive the following pop-up error: 'Could not fetch installed application list, please make sure hotkey service is running or contact System Administrator'.
Windows and all apps from the store are completely up-to-date.
Thanks for your help.

Welcome to HP Support Community!
We noticed that this thread hasn't had any updates in a while since your original post; while this is rare, we didn't want this post to remain unanswered, so, here's the solution to your query. We hope it helps you and everyone viewing this post 😊
Thanks for sharing those details—it’s clear you’ve already taken the right steps by installing the HP Programmable Key app and ensuring your system is up to date.
That error message typically points to the HP Hotkey UWP Service not running or not starting correctly in the background.
Here’s how to resolve it:
🛠️ Step-by-Step Fix for HP Programmable Key App Error
1. Check and Restart the HP Hotkey UWP Service
- Press Windows + R, type services.msc, and press Enter.
- In the Services window, scroll down and locate HP Hotkey UWP Service.
- Right-click it and select Properties.
- Set Startup type to Automatic.
- Click Start (if the service is not already running), then click OK.
- Restart your laptop and try the HP Programmable Key app again.
This service is essential for the app to detect installed applications and assign them to the programmable key.
2. Reinstall the HP Programmable Key App
If the issue persists:
- Uninstall the app from Settings > Apps > Installed apps.
- Reinstall it from the Microsoft Store.
Let me know if the key still doesn’t respond after these steps. You’ve done everything right so far—this should get that F12 key working the way you want. Happy customizing!
