HP ROVE ENVY

My mother has an HP ROVE ENVY , she recently called in our local computer guys who due to hardrive error and it dying, put a  new hard  drive  in windows 10.4 and since then it won't shut down last thing at night, it's so weird, it's not updating,  it says shutting down on screen and the screen goes black but the power button stays on and you can still hear the  motor? processor? Im not technical so not sure of the correct term, we've left it for up to 4hrs just in case it's updating but it just doesn't go off, in the end we have to power off using the button. During the day  just as a test we've tried and nine times out of 10 it powers off, but at night when she shuts down it won't. We've used the same computer guys for years and they are really good and helpful, but they have been absolutely stumped by this, it's been back to the workplace three times now, in this latest attempt they updated Bios or something and said this should fix it , but it hasn;t, still the same problem of not being able to shut down at the end of the night, it wasn't doing this in 10.3 , the only other option we were looking at is  switching off updates to see if that fixes it, but whatever it is it's driving me nuts,:smileyvery-happy: my mums a pensioner and its her bit of social lifeline, so the sooner she's happy, i can get on with my own stuff and be happy too 🙂  I would so appreciate some feedback/advice on the problem please. Thanks in advance.

Hi Fingers crossed but while the two things you suggested didn't work I continued to try and fix the problem, and  it looks like it's fixed :LaughingTears:  so I thought i would share what it was and what i did on here in case it helps someone else.  I'd been manually updating before shutting down to see if that would fix it and while it didn't I noticed that most updates coming through were Windows Defender, i know how much security can mess up some computers and while it worked fine in windows 10.3 i wondered whether there might be a problem in 10.4 .  Unfortunately there's no longer an option to switch off windows defender but if you install another security, it detects it and steps back and lets the new one take over, so i installed AVG FREE Basic , then i went to security notifications and switched off Windows defender notifications. ...hey presto the computer completely shuts down fine an has been doing so ever since, no more black screen but the processor still whirring or the power light still on, it's finally fixed, so i would suggest if anyone else has the same problem to check  if windows defender is the cause.

As I Understand you want to help fix your mom's PC as it doesn't seem to shut down at night, however, works during the day at times, please correct me I'm wrong.

And No worries, as I'll be glad to help you, that said, I'll need a few more details to dissect your concern & provide an accurate solution:

Hi, thanks, but neither worked, Bios has already been updated just last week but still had the same problem, just tried the  solution on youtube about unticking"allow this computer to turn off this device to save power"  but that doesn't fix the problem either. It's weird, occassionally it shuts down but mainly not, however if i power it down via the button then switch the computer back on then try shutting down again it will shut down the second time, it just won't shut down the first time. We didn't have this problem in 10.3 its only since being upgraded to 10.4, someone suggested getting the computer guys to take it back to 10.3 and switch off updates but that;s not really ideal, there has got to be a better solution surely as i see i'm not the only one with this problem?
