Wow, that is exceptionally helpful. I spent a good few hrs trying to find info on this PC. I had it running in my garage to use as a reference while I work on various projects. It has a VGA output that had broken after the cat or my wife threw it across the room. It amazingly still turns on except the VGA input ripped off the motherboard. So I think I'll stick a card in that has HDMI output. While I'm in it, I'll poke around at the other upgrades you mentioned.
Thank you!

Welcome to our HP Community forum!
Thanks for reaching out! The HP Pavilion Slimline s5123w (NY469AA) is an obsolete (legacy) desktop that limits some upgrade options due to its age, but there are still possibilities for various upgrades. Here's what you could consider:
1. Graphics Card Compatibility:
The Pavilion Slimline s5123w is a small form factor (SFF) PC, which means it has limited space for a larger graphics card. Additionally, it uses a 220-watt power supply (p/n: 504966-001), which can also limit the power requirements for any upgrade.
Here are the general requirements and guidelines:
- PCIe x16 Slot: The desktop has a PCIe x16 slot, which may be compatible with some modern graphics cards, and you need to choose one that fits in the SFF case.
- Power Supply: The 220-watt PSU might not be sufficient for high-performance graphics cards, so you’ll need to choose one that works within this power limit.
2. Upgrade Options:
Here are some graphics cards that should fit and work with the HP Pavilion Slimline s5123w:
Low-Profile Graphics Cards (Best for SFF PCs)
These cards are specifically designed for small form factor cases and can provide a decent performance boost for gaming and productivity without overwhelming the power supply:
- NVIDIA GT 1030 (2GB GDDR5) – A very popular choice for low-power, low-profile upgrades. It’s excellent for light gaming and multimedia use.
- AMD Radeon RX 550 (2GB GDDR5) – Another low-profile card, offering good performance for 1080p gaming and general tasks.
- NVIDIA GTX 1050 Ti (4GB GDDR5) – If you need a bit more power, this is a solid option, though you’ll need to double-check the power requirements and space.
Integrated Graphics (Alternative Option):
If you’re not doing demanding gaming or graphics-heavy tasks, you may also consider improving the integrated graphics through a CPU upgrade. The integrated GPU performance can be slightly enhanced by moving to a better processor, depending on your current configuration.
3. Power Considerations:
Before purchasing a new card, check if the power supply can handle the additional load. If the card you're interested in requires more power, you might want to consider upgrading the ATX PSU as well, though that can be tricky in a small form factor case.
4. RAM Upgrade:
- You can upgrade your PC with up to 2 x 2GB of DDR2 PC2-6400, 800 MHz, Non-ECC, DIMM, 240-pin RAM sticks. However, some sources claim compatibility up to 2 x 4GB RAM sticks.
5. Processor Upgrade:
- You can upgrade to an AMD Sempron LE-1300 (1-Core, 1-Thread, 2.30 GHz, 45-watt TDP). However, some sources claim that you should be able to install an Athlon 64 X2 5400+ Brisbane 65nm edition* (2-Cores, 2-Threads, 2.80 GHz, 65-watt TDP). If your PC were my upgrade project, I would try it, but it may not be your cup of Joe.
* Please be advised that the AMD Athlon 64 X2 5400+ actually has two different versions with different TDP ratings:
- Athlon 64 X2 5400+ (Brisbane, 65nm, 2.8 GHz, 65W TDP) – ✅ Recommended for your system.
- Athlon 64 X2 5400+ (Windsor, 90nm, 2.8 GHz, 89W TDP) – ❌ Avoid!
6. Primary (Boot) Drive Upgrade:
- Switching from an old mechanical (HDD) drive to an SDD drive will speed up your PC quite a bit.
Let me know if you'd like further help or if you need additional details.
Kind Regards,
