I have an HP S650 1.92TB SSD drive that frequently crashes and shows up in task manager as a "1023MB "HDD". Entering the serial number the lookup pulls nothing up so i can't chat with an agent about this.

Hi @Andre2k2,
Welcome to HP Support Community.
Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.
It sounds like you're dealing with a significant issue with your HP S650 1.92TB SSD, where the drive frequently crashes and shows incorrect capacity in Task Manager. Here’s a structured approach to diagnosing and resolving the problem:
1. Initial Diagnostics:
Check Connections:
- Ensure that the SSD is properly connected to the motherboard and power supply. Sometimes, loose connections can cause drive issues.
Check for Firmware Updates:
- Visit HP’s official website or the SSD manufacturer’s website to check for any firmware updates for the SSD. Updating the firmware might resolve issues related to drive stability and recognition.
Check for Driver Updates:
- Ensure that your system has the latest drivers for the SSD. Go to the Device Manager on your PC, find the SSD under "Disk Drives," right-click, and choose "Update Driver."
2. Testing and Troubleshooting:
Run Diagnostics:
- Many SSD manufacturers offer diagnostic tools to check the health and status of their drives. For HP SSDs, you might use the HP Support Assistant or other third-party tools like CrystalDiskInfo to check drive health.
Check Disk Management:
- Open Disk Management (Right-click on Start > Disk Management) and see how the drive is recognized there. Check for any anomalies or errors related to partitioning and formatting.
Run CHKDSK:
- Open Command Prompt as an administrator and run chkdsk /f /r to check for and repair file system errors. Note that this might take some time to complete.
Test with Different Port/Cable:
- Try connecting the SSD to a different SATA port or using a different SATA cable. This can help rule out issues with the port or cable.
3. Data Backup and Recovery:
Backup Important Data:
- If the SSD is still accessible, immediately back up any important data to another drive or storage device to prevent data loss.
Data Recovery Tools:
- If the drive is failing and you can’t access your data, you might need to use data recovery software such as Recuva, EaseUS Data Recovery, or other similar tools to attempt to recover your data.
I hope this helps.
Take care and have a good day.

Hi @Rachel571,
I have checked the connections to both power and the motherboard, I have tried multiple computers to rule out other potential failures as well.
The drive is completely electrically dead at this point, it does not show any entries in the BIOS/UEFI of the computers I have tried, let alone operating systems.
My data is safe, the drive was a part of a mirror and the volume is regularly backed up.
The drive was only 1 year and 5 months old, I would like to use the 3 year warranty provided with the drive to obtain a replacement.
