Dear HP Support Team,

I am experiencing an issue with my HP Portable SSD P500 (1TB) external drive. When transferring large files (approximately a 26 GB program setup file), the data transfer stops midway. During the transfer, the device appears as an “Unknown Device” in Windows Device Manager. This error does not occur during initial connection.

I am able to transfer smaller files (e.g., a 14.7 GB PDF) without any problem, but I face issues when copying large files such as setup programs. I have also tried compressing the file into a zip archive before transferring, but that did not resolve the issue. My main goal is to extract the existing files from the SSD, but I am unable to do so.

Furthermore, I could not find any suitable driver online for the device hardware ID:
USB\VID_0000&PID_0004\5&274D72C6&0&19
I believe the main problem is related to the driver.

Here are the details of the SSD:

  • SSD serial number: (edited)

  • SSD part number: 1FSP4AA#ABC

  • Model: HP Portable SSD P500 1TB

  • All Windows updates are installed.

  • USB cable and port have been tested with different variants.

  • The problem occurs on multiple computers.

Please assist me with this issue and provide any available solutions or official firmware update tools.

Thank you in advance for your support.

Best regards,

Hi @HASANASGAROV

Welcome to the HP Support Community! We're here to help you get back up and running.

Thank you for sharing the situation—and I’m truly sorry your HP Portable SSD P500 is disconnecting during large file transfers and appearing as an “Unknown Device.” I appreciate the thorough steps you’ve already taken.

Let’s walk through a focused recovery path to help stabilize the connection and extract your data.

Step-by-step recovery for HP Portable SSD P500 driver and transfer issues

1. Download the official driver and firmware tools

  • Visit the HP P500 Portable SSD Software and Driver Downloads page
  • Select your Windows version and download the available firmware update utility and driver package
  • If no specific driver is listed, the SSD uses native Windows USB Mass Storage drivers—firmware may still help

2. Use a powered USB hub or alternate port

  • Connect the SSD through a powered USB 3.0 hub to ensure stable voltage during large transfers
  • Avoid USB front panel ports or extension cables
  • Prefer direct connection to a rear USB 3.0 port on a desktop or primary port on a laptop

3. Disable USB selective suspend

  • Go to Control Panel > Power Options > Change plan settings > Change advanced power settings
  • Expand USB settings > USB selective suspend setting
  • Set both On battery and Plugged in to Disabled
  • Apply and restart your PC

4. Confirm device recognition and driver status

  • Connect the SSD and open Device Manager
  • If listed as “Unknown Device,” right-click > Uninstall device
  • Disconnect and reconnect the SSD
  • If prompted, allow Windows to search for drivers
  • If still unrecognized, run the firmware update tool from HP’s site

5. Extract files using file recovery tools (if needed)

If the SSD disconnects before completing large transfers:

  • Use a tool like EaseUS Data Recovery or Recuva
  • Scan the SSD and extract files in smaller batches
  • Avoid writing new data to the drive during recovery

6. Test on a different OS environment (Windows only)

  • Try connecting the SSD to a freshly installed Windows 10 or 11 system
  • This helps rule out driver conflicts or USB controller instability

Let me know how the SSD responds after these steps. If the firmware update stabilizes the connection, we can explore safe transfer strategies for large files. You’ve done everything right by staying observant—I’ll be here to guide you further.
