I have the subject HP desktop, bought from Sam's Club. Online claims there is an M.2 socket 3 Key M connector on the motherboard, and there is. Slot Security in the BIOS has M.2 as enable.
When I installed a Samsung 960 NVMe in the slot, nothing was recognized by the BIOS or Windows 10.
When I installed a Samsung 850 SATA in the slot, boot hung at the HP logo.
Any ideas as to whether the interface is PCIe/NVMe or SATA?

Hi,
How do you know that the Samsung 960 m.2 NVMe SSD is not being recognized in the BIOS? Where did you look?

Big Dave, thanks for the quick reply!
I bought the Samsung 960 NVMe and installed it. When I turned on the Slimline, I checked BIOS to ensure that Slot Security for the M.2 was "enabled." I looked under the Storage section, only the supplied 7200rpm SATA drive was shown, no hint of the SSD.
Then, booting into the Windows 10 Home that came with the machine, Disk Management did not see the SSD, only the spinning 7200rpm SATA drive.
When I bought the Samsung 850 SATA SSD, I installed it, then powered on the Slimline: it hung at the HP in a circle logo; F10, F11, ESC, etc, did nothing. It never completed the boot sequence, so I could not look at BIOS settings. Also, no Windows 10 startup at all: just a hang at the HP logo. (When I went back to Fry's, their tech repair dept had no idea what is happening.)
I called HP Support this morning, I was on hold for 40 minutes. The 1st line person answered and said I need to talk to parts, and she transferred me. After waiting 5 minutes more, got disconnected.
I am somewhat depressed.
The Maple motherboard in this Slimline is said to have an M.2 socket 3 Key M, but there are no details in any of the online HP docs I have seen: https://support.hp.com/us-en/document/c05538968
Thanks for any ideas on how to proceed.

Hi,
Update the diagnostics.
Time to retest each device. However this time TAP the ESC key after power on and then select F2.
Another possibility is that the SSD is behind in firmware.
