Hi,
I have an Omen 17ck series, with a thunderbolt 3 port, and I want to connect it simultaneously to two monitors:

- a Dell 24'' 60Hz FHD monitor.
- A BenQ Mobiuz 144Hz 2K monitor.

Will the dock in question be able to handle it?
Thank you 🙂

Hi @gettyu ,

Welcome to The HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

I understand the HP Thunderbolt Dock 120W G2 can support dual monitors, but whether it can handle both of your specific monitors depends on the total bandwidth requirements and the display capabilities of your Omen 17ck series laptop's Thunderbolt 3 port.

Here’s how it breaks down:

Thunderbolt 3 Bandwidth: Thunderbolt 3 can provide up to 40 Gbps of bandwidth, but the exact performance can vary depending on how the laptop and dock allocate bandwidth between multiple displays and other peripherals.

Monitor Resolutions and Refresh Rates:

  • Dell 24" FHD monitor: This requires relatively low bandwidth at 1920x1080 (60Hz), so it's easily supported by the dock.
  • BenQ Mobiuz 144Hz 2K monitor: This requires much more bandwidth, at 2560x1440 (144Hz). Running a 2K display at 144Hz will consume a substantial portion of the Thunderbolt bandwidth.

Dual Monitor Support:

  • The HP Thunderbolt Dock 120W G2 typically supports dual monitors up to 4K@60Hz or similar combinations. Since one of your monitors is FHD (lower demand) and the other is 2K at 144Hz (higher demand), it should theoretically handle both, provided that the 144Hz is supported on the second monitor. However, there is a chance that the refresh rate on the 2K monitor may be limited (potentially to 120Hz or lower) when both displays are connected simultaneously.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.
