My problem has gone away but I can't say I understand why.

What I did was take apart everything - by that I mean the only things I added, which was an extra 8GB ram stick (it came with 8GB) and a hdd I added. I didn't touch imp things like CPU etc. I took out memory and hdd, added them both back in.

This time the display came back and since I still had the bios USB, I was able to select boot from USB and the update went fine.

Nothing has changed in the system. And the only time I opened it before was to add the memory/hdd before.

My guess is something may be loose and this caused it to behave like this? strange thing is the HDD was powered on as it was making noises.

I wish I knew what happened, but I'm happy I have my PC back. and in future I certainly won't be doing bios updates from windows, I always thought that was supposed to be more reliable?

Greetings @tehdude

Good to see all is well.

The HP Txxx PC's are finicky with memory. Most folks in the Forum recommend Crucial Memory when doing memory upgrades on this series of MBs. So reseating the memory was a good choice.

I usually recommend not doing HP firmware updates using Windows Update.

You can stop HP firmware updates offered by Windows as follows: Enter Advanced System Settings in Search. Select the appropriate search result.

Select the Hardware tab within the System Properties dialog box. Select Device Installation Settings. Select No. Save changes.

Select Apply then OK.

You could always enable HP firmware updates down the road if needed.

Regards
