HP Z2 Mini G5 Workstation RCTO Base Model

Hi.

It's been 3 good, and productive years of using my HP Z2 Mini G5
Intel® Core™ i9-10900K, 64 GB ram and Nvidia RTX 3000.

With the increasing demand in working with 3D modals. It is time to upgrade and the only thing slowing me down is the GPU.

I've been searching and there aren't many CPUs that will beat the base frequency, 3.7 GHz of the i9-10900K.

So I switch to finding a suitable MXM GPU for the Z2MiniG5.
External GPU was also an option that pops up.
There is one post that a user installed an ADT-Link MXM to PCIe kit on an old laptop where the enhance display is also cast to the laptop screen. Although the Z2MiniG5 is considered a mini desktop. It uses MXM GPU due to its'compact size.

Before exploring the eGPU option, I'd like to know if another MXM GPU which is meant for HP zBook Laptops,
namely the Nvidia Quadro 5000 (16GB), will work on my Z2 Mini G5 MXM slot.

I'd appreciate if anyone with sound knowleadge of the Z2 Mini G5 would shed some light on this matter.

Particularly on any GPU upgrade options on the Z2 Mini G5.

Thank you.

Hi @Bugzie

Welcome to the HP support community.

I understand you want to upgrade , and I apologize for any inconvenience this may have caused. I'm here to help you today.

We do not recommend modifying the hardware as it will void the warranty however if you want to i have some suggestions.

Upgrading the GPU in your HP Z2 Mini G5 Workstation is a great way to enhance performance, especially for 3D modeling tasks. Here are some considerations regarding your options:

MXM GPU Upgrade

Compatibility: The Z2 Mini G5 uses a specific MXM slot, and while it can technically accept MXM GPUs from the HP ZBook line (like the Nvidia Quadro 5000), there are a few caveats:

  • BIOS Compatibility: Ensure the GPU you choose is supported by the Z2 Mini G5 BIOS. HP often has specific firmware that may not recognize all MXM cards, even if they fit physically.
  • Power Requirements: Check the power requirements for the Quadro 5000 to ensure that the workstation can supply adequate power for it.

Cooling: The Z2 Mini G5 has limited space, so ensure that the cooling solution for the new GPU is adequate. Overheating can lead to throttling or failure.

Driver Support: Nvidia Quadro drivers are typically stable for professional applications, but you may need to ensure that the drivers are compatible with your current setup.

External GPU (eGPU) Option

Performance: An eGPU can offer significant performance boosts, especially if you choose a high-end GPU. However, performance can be limited by the bandwidth of the connection (typically Thunderbolt or USB-C).

Adaptors: Using an ADT-Link MXM to PCIe kit is a creative solution, but it’s essential to check compatibility and performance limitations. Depending on the connection type, the display output might work differently.

Display Output: Make sure that the eGPU setup supports the display configuration you need, especially if you plan to use the laptop’s built-in display.

Recommendations

  • Research User Experiences: Look for forums or communities focused on HP Z2 Mini G5 or similar workstations to see if other users have successfully upgraded their GPUs.
  • Contact HP Support: They might provide guidance on compatible MXM GPUs or eGPU setups specifically for your model.
  • Consider Future Upgrades: If you're investing in a new GPU, think about your future needs. Ensure that the choice will keep you satisfied for the next few years.

Conclusion

If you can confirm compatibility for the Quadro 5000 and ensure proper cooling and power, it could be a solid upgrade. Alternatively, if you want more flexibility, an eGPU might be the way to go, keeping in mind the potential bandwidth limitations. Let me know if you have more questions or need further assistance!

I hope this helps! Keep me posted.

Hi Raj

Thank you for your ellaborated reply.

Although there are many forum that mentioned GPU upgrades.
Your reply generally evolves around the Z2 Mini G5.

As this is my main and only working tool. I cannot risk any failure.
So, I'll have to wait for the evovlement of new ways to connect to external GPUs and proven Z2 Mini GPU upgrades.
Or perhaps when I have another means of doing my work with another PC.
Thank you again.
