Hi @tmctubes,
Welcome to the HP Support Community.
I'd be happy to help you!
On most HP Pavilion All-In-One computers, including the 27-R114 model, the fan typically stops running shortly after the system is shut down. However, there are a few exceptions and additional details worth noting:
Normal Behavior
Fan Operation During Shutdown:
- Immediate Shutdown: Generally, the fan will stop running once the system has completely shut down. This includes the time it takes for the operating system to close all processes and power down the hardware.
- Post-Shutdown: After the system is turned off, the fan should cease operation as the computer is no longer generating heat.
Thermal Management:
- Cooling After Shutdown: In some cases, if the system was very hot before shutdown, the fan might continue to run briefly to cool down residual heat. This usually only lasts for a short period after shutdown.
Exceptions and Considerations
Fan Running Briefly After Shutdown:
- Residual Heat: If the fan runs for a few minutes after shutdown, it might be working to dissipate residual heat from the CPU or other components. This is normal behavior and should stop once the temperature has stabilized.
Fan Issues or Continuous Operation:
- Fan Not Stopping: If the fan continues to run long after the system is shut down, it could indicate a hardware issue, such as a malfunctioning fan or a problem with the motherboard.
- BIOS Settings: Some BIOS settings might influence fan behavior. Check your BIOS/UEFI settings to see if there are any options related to fan control.
System in Sleep or Hibernate Mode:
- Sleep/Hibernate Modes: If the system is in sleep or hibernate mode rather than fully shut down, the fan may continue to operate depending on the power management settings.

Hi @tmctubes,
Troubleshooting Steps
Check BIOS Settings:
- Restart your computer and enter BIOS/UEFI settings by pressing Esc or F10 during startup.
- Check for any fan-related settings and ensure they are configured correctly.
Update BIOS and Drivers:
- Visit the HP Support website and download the latest BIOS and drivers for your model.
Inspect Hardware:
- Ensure that the fan and other components are free from dust and debris. Dust buildup can affect cooling performance and fan operation.
If the fan behavior seems unusual or problematic, it’s best to ensure your system is properly maintained and check for any potential hardware issues. contact HP Phone Support for further assistance.
