HP dc 7800 CMT
Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

I am trying to upgrade the graphics  in my HP  dc 7800 CMT in order to run a CAD program that won't run on the current graphics.  I am not very experienced at this sort of thing although I did upgrade a previous desktop similarly. I installed  a GEFORCE GT 610 1GB DDR3 PCI-E 2.0 DirectX 11 graphics card in my HP dc 7800 CMT.  I found elswhere in the forum that it would be compatible.  I followed precedures found in a Youtube video to physically install it. When I tried to install the downloaded driver it said it couldn't find the card.  The device manager doesn't show it.  Any help will be apprreciated.

Hi:

If you did not uninstall the previous onboard Intel graphics adapter and driver in the device manager before installing your new video card, that could be a reason for your current dilemma.

If you did not do that first, shut down, unplug the PC, remove the graphics card.

Plug in and turn on the PC.

After you get into Windows, go to the device manager, click to expand the Display Adapters device manager category, right click on the Intel HD graphics adapter listed there.

Select Uninstall and also check the Uninstall driver box.

Do not restart the PC.

Instead, shut it down, uplug it and reinstall your new video card.

You're very welcome.

I also forgot to mention...you probably lost the onboard audio.

If you haven't discovered that yet, or don't already know how to get the onboard audio to work, here's how...

Why you lost the onboard audio...

The GT 610 has an HDMI port, which means there is a separate audio controller on the graphics card which works the HDMI audio.

The dc7800 has a legacy BIOS, so it does not recognize the HDMI audio as part of the graphics card, so not only did the BIOS disable the onboard video when you installed the graphics card, it also disabled the onboard audio, because the BIOS thinks you also installed an audio card too.

The fix is easy...

Restart the PC, tap the F10 key to get access to the BIOS.

Go to the Advanced tab>Device Options menu>find the onboard audio setting.

It will be set to Disabled.  Change the setting to Enabled.  Save the setting there, and again when you exit the BIOS.

Opon returning to Windows, the onboard audio will be restored.
