I upgraded my HP envy with a brand new RTX 5070 from a 4060(the prebuilt came with it) that i had in it before hand, and whenever i plug it in (the 5070 is plugged into a external psu which i jump start) and whenever i go to turn it on afterwards it just beeps and wont show anything but the gpu turns on and spins it does 6 beeps specifically 3 long 3 short. I have tried everything listen on past forums of people with gpu issues, i tried disabling secure boot, removing ram, removing the battery from the motherboard, updated bios, i have tried everything under the sun but nothing works, my last option is legacy boot but apparently that isnt an option on an intel cpu ( i have a i5 14400f) what are my options here?

Hi @144Millions,

I know how disappointing this must feel —you invested in a new GPU expecting a smooth upgrade, and instead you’re stuck with errors even though your older card works perfectly. Anyone in your situation would feel frustrated, especially when the problem isn’t your fault but a limitation of the system itself.

Your HP Envy prebuilt can’t use the RTX 5070 because the HP OEM motherboard and BIOS aren’t designed to support GPUs that new or powerful. Even though the card fits physically and the fans spin, the BIOS fails when trying to start the GPU.

The 3 long + 3 short beeps tell us exactly what’s happening:

3x3 Beeps = GPU initialization failure

  • Your RTX 4060 works because it’s within the supported range of the HP BIOS.

The RTX 5070 doesn’t work because:

  • HP’s BIOS doesn’t support the newer GPU firmware (VBIOS) used by the 5070.
  • The 5070 needs more power during startup than the motherboard allows.
  • The PCIe communication required by the 5070 is not fully supported by HP’s OEM board.

So the BIOS can’t complete the video handshake during startup → and it throws the 6-beep error.

Take care and have an amazing day ahead! 🚀
