Hello everyone,

I own a desktop computer :  HP z230 SFF, with Xeon CPU, as it was coming from the factory.

As long as it is possible, I would like to upgrade the CPU, 

to the most powerful one that fits.

Is it possible to upgrade the CPU ?

And what CPU could I put into that computer ?

Btw, what Xeon processor is currently fitted in your HP Z230 SFF?

Arguably the fastest non-Xeon CPU compatible with your Merlin Rev A motherboard is the Intel Core i7-4790 CPU (3.60 GHz up to 4.00 GHz turbo mode, 4 cores, 8 threads, TDP 84 watt).

Once I know what Xeon you have fitted, and it is determined that an i7-4790 would indeed be a good CPU upgrade, you can purchase this processor quite inexpensively ($72) such as here: https://www.ebay.com/itm/384110321094?epid=1937970904&hash=item596ec25dc6%3Ag%3Aq48AAOSwag1fiJFO&LH_... .

[EDIT:] Overall, the Xeon E3-1281v3 (3.70 GHz up to 4.10 GHz turbo mode, 4 cores, 8 threads, TDP 82 watt) scores the highest: a 78.8% ranking as per UserBenchMark [dot] com, vs. 76.1% for the Intel i7-4790 -see links.
